    painting wood colors

Marc, Which kit are you painting, that would be a big help. Is it a late period Auxiliary Infantryman or a 1st cent AD Legionnaire? That may account for the instruction sheet.

    painting wood colors

I believe Frank is correct. Every Roman shield that I have seen illustrated is painted a reddish brown leather. As far as painting wood, I undercoat with a acrylic base color that is close to the color of the wood that I want to depict: oak=yellow brown; walnut- deep brown, etc. I then apply a...

    Roman Centurion Bust

Brandy, The face looks very good, especially the eyes. On the cloak, I think you need some variation in the color of the shadows. Especially in large scale, I would add some deeper shadows to some of the folds. A deep shadow color can be made by mixing in some purple madder and indigo oil...

    Some of My Work

I actually wrote an outline for a book once. The problem is I am such a slow painter that I don't have eough photos to illustrate it. Thanks for all of the kind comments.

    light vs dark base coat

I always like my undercoats to be similar to my oil base color. If it is too dark it is hard to cover, too light and the oils show streaks. Just the way I do it.

    problems with oil painting

A problem with blending oil paints can be caused by too much paint. Most painters, when they start in oils, apply too much paint. I use my oil paints straight out of the tube with no thinning. I use the brush to spread the paint as thin as posible. After this, I take a large dry brush and remove...

    Pastel chalk sticks

I just scrape them with a #11 xacto blade. I apply after the figure is completed and attached to the base. I just dust the powder on with a dry brush. I don't use any kind of fixative. Sometimes I will literally scrub the powder into the paint to simulate dirt or fading. It works pretty well for...

    The mother of all dioramas

Bill actually had more of a background in theater than fine arts. He explained to me that he paints a face similar to putting on theatrical make-up. I think that is why he has such a good feel for staging his figures. I was lucky because I was able to watch him sculpt and paint the majority of...

Guy, I believe they are blue like the facings. I will check Rousselot when I get hoe.

    Dull Coting

There is no need to put a "protective" finish on a figure. I have figures that I painted over 20 years ago and they still look the same. Every time that I have used an overcoat it has been a disaster. It is better to control the finish during the painting phase. If I absolutely have to use an...

    Devine Wind Bust

Craig, You can mix some Tit White with Mars Yellow. Not too much yellow, keep it pale. However, this mix is much more opaque than Naples Yellow. So, just a tiny dot and then blend thoroughly.

The Siege of Amida, 359 A.D.

I agree that the photos set the mood of the scene. However the lighting is a little too dark to really see the painting. One thing I would suggest is to vary the colors and add some randomness to the painting. For example, each of the Romans' tunics appear to be painted in the exact same colors...

    Rifle Green

For oils, I would start with a basic mix of Indigo and Mars Yellow. It can then be tinted with almost any color: Sepia, Lamp Black, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, etc. I start with the same mix for French Dragoons. During this period, to yield a green uniform it was first dyed blue (indigo) then...

    Daimyo, Mounted Japanese War Lord

For the horse to be in scale, the rider would have to be 8ft tall. Not likely in Feudal Japan.

    What glue ? someone please

I only use 5 minute epoxy on figures, both metal and resin. In over 25 years of painting I have never had a part fall off. I also pin any major joints.

    A wash & a primer question

I have used Floquil Reefer white, thinned with Diosol for years. I always brush it on and never use a spray. I used to buy it by the six pack from Micromark. A primer which I now use is sold at Home Depot: Painter's Touch Flat White Latex. It is very durable and dries very matte. I use the small...

rio rondo carbide scrapers & tools

I bought a set of the carbide scrapers several years ago. They are terrific for cleaning up figures, especially resin. They also work well on metal. By the way, the Rio Rondo book on painitng horses is also superb.
