Alex-

Very nice. Good job capturing the character of the guardsman. This is a nice piece. Pls post more as you progress.

Keith

Hi Keith,
I will sure keep you posted,

By-the-way the reason I posted him, was in response to Johns posting called “Gold Laceâ€!
The gold lace and metal effect on the imperial Guard’s hat my be of help.

Happy Painting
Alex

Thanks john ,
The eyes are Archer (EZ-EYES), and a little floor wax.

Hope it helped !
Alex

Hi Alex
I too am well impressed with the eye detail
also the slight sheen on the skintone, adds life.

Floor wax, must remember that.

Thank's for the inspiration

"The eyes are Archer (EZ-EYES)"

I've never heard of Archer EZ-Eyes, what are they?

thanks,

Roger

Thanks Frank,

The slight sheen on the skin tone is my wash technique and dull coat.

The floor wax, sheen is for the eyes.

Happy painting

Alex

Thanks Alex,

Looks like a quick and easy way for eyes. I assume the floor wax also acts as a sealer for the decal, have you ever had a problem with the decals peeling or coming off?

Roger

Roger,
Never, the biggest problem is cutting them out!
Tip try a miniature punch set, I think Red Lancers sells them.

Alex

Wow! Eye decals and I have spent all these years trying to paint them. I knew there had to be an easier way. Thanks.

Alex,

Really. No offense. But you are using decals for eyes? That's cheating. COnsidering the heart and soul of every figure artist's ability lies in the eyes , you are using decals??!!

I honestly (after a few drinks tonight) don't mean to be a pain in the A$%, but decals!? The eyes are the most important thing on a figure. To use decals is cheating and really would disqualify from any judging anywhere.

I guess commerically it would be ok. But for those of us who strive for perfection, the "eyes have it" to quote Bob Knee. That's the hardest part!

Lou

Hi Lou,

I have been painting eyes for over 30 years and I have a whole chapter dedicated to my way of doing eyes. In fact, I have three different approaches: painting the eyes, punch with miniature punch sets and tape , and decals. My philosophy is to use what works best--or brings the best results.

In my opinion the eyes are important but part of the whole. Of cause they do matter but are not the entire focus.

You see Lou, the secret here is that the face must support itself without the eyes. The face should project feelings, emotions and character, and in some cases death where the eyes are closed or missing. The eyes seal the deal and or throw it over the top on an already well painted and vibrant face. This is one of the reasons, why I do the eyes last not first.

So I am sending you a sketch of my eyes, I just did for this post! As you can see, I can draw and paint eyes, but that does not exclude the decals, should I see the need or it makes my task easier.

Again, my philosophy is to use what works best and brings out the best results.

My brush is at you service!

Alex

Alex-

Lovely sketch. I hope you don't mind but I have kep a copy and added to my own reference binder.

We're not going to get in to this whole "My Art is better than your Art..." thing are we, guys?

Keith

Keith,
Your on the list , and yes you are right,
It’s time to move on!

Thanks Keith,
Alex

P.S. Enjoy the sketch!

Lou,
You're certainly welcome to your opinion.

I will certainly get you a copy of my book once it's been release, till then let's move on as Keith suggested.

Glad you liked the sketch.

Alex

Decals for eyes, heh? Well, why not?

Someone who generates this much controversy even BEFORE his book is out cannot be altogether bad.

Alex, thanks for sharing and looking forward to even more revelations. ;)

Q.

Lou,
I have to agree with you...
The eyes are the key to the soul...In our artform, the eyes give the figger it's charactor and captures the passion of the moment the sculptor created. I also feel a great deal of pride when I pull off a great set of eyes that I painted; I am sure I wouldn't have that same feeling of pride using decals, but that is me...

Hope all is well...
Are you going to MFCA this year?
