For what it's worth, I think it looks good as it is. Getting that balance can be tricky sometimes, especially with oils when you lose some of the contrast as the paint dries out.

Thank you and that balance is something I struggle with, he’s painted with acrylics which are new for me but I used Golden Barok Red as the final glaze as my only oil on him. I couldn’t help myself and added more lights but still feel like he needs more.

I honestly think he looks great, but it's your figure so your call Steve!

Acrylics are a "dark art" to me. I've tried many times to master them but always end up falling back on oils, which is what I'm most comfortable with. So my usual M.O. is acrylic base followed by shading & highlighting in oils.

Looking forward to seeing the tanker finished!

Steve thanks and I believe he will stay like he is , acrylics scared me until I started using a wet palette and drying retarder then things became easy, I also love being able to dry the paint with a hair dryer.

A difficult thing to depict but it does look good, maybe Matt it down a bit more but it looks great, mind this means a lot of weathering on everything else!

Cheers Simon

Simon that suggestion was exactly what I was looking for, I applied a light dusting of semi gloss simply because I figured oil can be shiny but it’s too glossy. Yes now that I’ve oiled up his face this now means more work…… Your thoughts on more highlights on the oiled surfaces and what color, skin tones or oil film color.

I once tried painting oil film and failed miserably, far too many colours that are barely visible. The oil might give a shine if it was fresh clean oil, but I reckon he's had his head in the engine and working parts so the chance of it being clean oil are pretty slim. I only ever sat in a tank once for a few minutes and that was enough for a life time so I'm not sure what the environment is like inside, but would imagine WWII it would be dirty and grimey and with dust clinging to the oil there would be little shine. Well that chaotic rambling is my thoughts so if you can pull something useful out of that good luck to you!

Thank you and you’ve given me some hope of salvaging what I have #$%^& up here, I’ll use the oil color itself to shade and highlight what I’ve done . This helps tremendously so thank you again for your insight and suggestion.

You are welcome, it's not often I know what I'm talking about these days so it's lucky you got me on a lucid day!! I know where you are coming from on this, you can get so caught up in the project that you can no longer see it objectively, that's the beauty of this site help is only a post away.

Cheers Simon

Really great looking dirt on the face, it looks really natural. The rest of the figure is beautifully painted almost a shame to have to dirty it up.

Nap those comments have given me fresh motivation to now finish him up , thank you so very much for your praise! I’am still trying to figure out acrylics and the glazing techniques that I’ve started using since giving up oils.

Simon you’re the reason his face has dirt and gunpowder soot so I must thank you, can I send him to you for the rest of the uniform soiling ?

This is really lovely! It's incredibly lifelike and I like what you've done with the dirt and goggles line. I think it's pretty convincing as dust/powder residue. The flesh tones you've gone for are great - what shades did you use?

Steve, I'm pleased to have helped, as for dirtying the rest of the uniform! There is a reason I don't weather any of my figures, I'm bloody hopeless at doing that sort of thing. Anyway considering you are still getting the hang of acrylics this figure is brilliant especially the face i can't wait to see what you do when you have them well within your comfort zone!

Cheers Simon
