Hi Planet folk, thought I would post this up to show a little progress, (thoughts would be nice)
120mm Sergeant Major
11th Hussars
Crimea
Sculpted by Maurice Corry

few mistakes on the way..... arms out to far, but I shall remedy that. Painting has along way to go in the details but I have not used a brush for nearly 25 years, so I am quit pleased.
The Blue is not as bright as the picture,(should have polarized

Very nice Malc.
I'm just undercoating this same figure. Have you painted the busby cap crimson or scarlet?
More photos would be good.

Jon

Hi Jon cheers, I have used a blend of both, I tend to go with the flow in my head until I think it looks right....To me , I will post more as I fill in the detail and sort the sword.

Malc

Thanks Blind Pew, I have a couple more come this week, 13th dragoon from Grenadier and Private 6th (Warwickshire) Regt. Omdurman 1898, trying to convince my self to do a modern Brit Camo in oils...:cautious: still could be interesting

Malc

He looks great Malc. Like you, I have only recently started painting again after a long absence and I would be over the moon to get results like this. Alas, it is not the case at the moment but I think I'm improving (slowly), mainly down to comments and tips from other, more experienced, members of this board but also from trying to replicate effects that I've seen in others work (i.e. blatantly copying them). For example, I particularly like the way you've done your blues and reds so I'll probably have a little play with some scrap figures to try and recreate those colours/blends.

Thanks for sharing your work, it really helps out biffs like me (y)

Cheers,
Billy :)

Hi Malc ,
Nice painting and WELCOME to PF , like the way this is going , its a nice figure for sure and a good choice.

Are you using Oils or Acrylics ?

Being a peasant and loving busts ..why not look at a bust from MMM as well or Stormtroopers V12 range ..its good to challenge!!!...me off to cuddle my GA ..of busts!!!!

25years off eh ..well folks if this is the result then I will see you all in 2039 .....

Thanks for sharing

Nap

PS Billy welcome to the figure frenzy of PF......you are not a biff mate ..whatever that is:whistle:

Thanks guys,

Hi Billy

forgive my ignorance  ..(biffs ?).. as for my blues and Reds I build them up, can take a while..(blues (n) more than reds)

Hi Nap

I use oils, I tried acrylics but they dry quicker than I can think and besides I like to think of our art as ART so I try to paint a little like I think an artist would,
not sure if that sounds (reads) right, or I get my meaning across.

I do plan on some busts, got another Crimea figure and a Brit on Afghan service on way, want to try some Camo in oils.

I think he looks great Malc and the position of his arms looks fine to me. Just a very little bit envious!
Jon

He looks the mutts nuts Malc, I'm really envious of what you can achieve with oils compared to my amateurish efforts.

Many thanks for the update, still following with great interest (y)

Cheers,
Billy :)

Thanks guys, most appreciated, I hope to have him finished in the next few weeks, although I need to straighten those strips up down his legs.

Hi Malc,
Very impressed with this so far, especially after a 25 year lay off. Blues, reds and yellows are not alway the easiest of colours and I think you are doing a stellar job.(y)
If this is getting the rust out, then there would be no hope for us if you painted every week;)
cheers
Richie

If those are the results you get after a 25 year absence then maybe I should give up painting for a while :). I think the trousers in particular look really good.
