The face doesn't look bad at all. I can understand using oils on faces, when I started back figure painting I stuck with oils for faces. I've switched to acrylics for fleshwork now but it's taken a while to get comfortable with them. However, I will always use oils for horses.
The main thing is the face looks very convincing when you look at it with the headgear, so I think you can be very content with that.

Thanks Nigel. As i've primed the horse in White, Will I need an acrylic White basecoat before applying oils, or just crack on with oils?

Thanks Nigel. Just so happens I came across all her videos yesterday. Yes, she's very good.

Except she's a he......;) Or was a he, sadly he died in 2014. A fantastic modeller who excelled at figures, AFVs, planes and dioramas.

Basecoat applied from W&N Lamp Black/Titanium White. I'm going to aim for a whiter head and slightly darker grey body with dapples ( but not overdone). Early days, but working roughly off images via Pinterest.
Avoid these Daley Rowney Graduate range of brushes (got mine from Hobbycraft). They lose hair worse than my cat.!!!

Nice one Glenn, with three cats in the house getting cat hairs off is enough of a problem. I would suggest adding a touch of colour to your grey mix, Brown's or blues, simple back and white mixes can be very flat and dead looking, a slight (very slight almost invisable) touch of colour will breath life into the horse coat.

Talking about brushes, I am a synthetic die hard, but recently discovered Armaster Brushes sold from The Art Shop Skipton. Bought initially to use when sculpting but now they are my favourite painting brushes.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. Yes, I agree. I was going to add a tiny drop of (probably Burnt Umber) to the next stage. I'll check the brushes out.
Thanks. atb Glenn

God idea from Simon adding a bit of colour keep it very limited

As for brushes ...have a look at Rosemary and Co .....I use Series 33 , kolinsky sable , good quality and reasonable in price

There’s tons f brushes of all types on the website https://www.rosemaryandco.com/

Enjoy the horse

I don't think I want brushes with bristles plucked from vegans! Or have I missed the point altogether!

Cheers Simon
