She still has something in mind for that chunk, so I’m still looking, HA! Actually, that chunk of drift wood had some incredible details that would have accented this set of figures nicely, but it aint’ worth the tussle later, if ya get my “drift”, HA!
It is easier to seek forgiveness, than to get permission...

I have just caught up again on your WIP on this diorama, the painting of the colour is superb.
All those kilts would drive me nuts, so hats off to you.
Will follow to the end.
Well done.

Thanks, Bob.

I figure once I get the faces and the tartans done in an acceptable order, I should be good to go. I'm a bit odd, not just because my wife says so, but because I have to get into the groove every time I get back to flesh work, and that could be a few attempts. No worries, I got my can of oven cleaner standing by, lol.

Thanks for watchin, Bob!

Thanks, Peter and Mike.

I finding after so many years of painting large scale figures that these tiny faces aren't as easy as I would expect. If you look at how Julia painted her figures, the eyes are done quite well, YIKES! I've already washed the face once after an hour of work, not unexpected, still getting into the groove. I was using too much paint for starters and I forgot to add acrylic retarder when working the eyes. I'll get it figured out, sooner or later.

Thanks for watching, Gents!

Let’s Face It!

Having not done 54mm, or 1/35th scale for that matter, in over ten years I don’t think I’m too far off. Let’s face it, this is the first time I’ve ever, ever painted eyes in this scale. I was going to place in a pupil, but decided against it. In this scale I think it’s a bit over the top and you’d only notice them in photos, not the actual figure presented before you in a vignette.

Naturally the face looks shiny and will dull as the oils set up, no worries. I did notice this face is a bit on the “tan” side of the tone spectrum, but he’s going to be on the ground in this vignette, so I will leave it as is. I’ve still got a bit of touch up to do on this face, teeth, ears, etc., but for now I’ll set this one aside and work the other ten.

Also, you will note the eye you see on the left is not exactly as the right. I had to trim some of the resin and clean up the eye lid a bit to make more room. It was very tight quarters in there, to say the least, so I got it as close as it’s going to get this go round.

So far, I’m happy with this face, I’ve only washed it off once, so that’s a good thing. And, as you can imagine, with spring coming up fast I’ve got fruit trees to trim and everything else that goes with this time of year. This is crashing my momentum. Happens every year, oh well, I’ll keep going as long as I can.

Thanks for watching. Cheers, Ski.

Ski, I know I've come in late, so apologies.
Thus far you've tackled it right. Flags are always a focus, so to get this particularly tricky example out of the way first was wise. There's a lot to get right, which you certainly appear to have done. One always has to give a flag the same focus and attention for a figure of the same height, which you have.
Planning well always helps, and your method of detaching arms during painting will help. I do this as I don't believe in the "If you can see it, you can paint it" line. Maybe you can, but can you paint it well?

I have a few of these figures myself, which I plan to do two at a time, in order to prevent it becoming a production line chore. I'll likely pause mid-way and do something entirely different, just to help stay focused. I'm a big believer in keeping interest in a figure is vital as otherwise it leads to poor work.
Please do let me know what your strategy is...

Anyway, excellent, top line stuff so far. Loving this.

Thank you, David, truckin along.

Please do let me know what your strategy is...

Thanks BP, I appreciate the encouragement, it's keeps me motivated. Yes, that flag was concerning me, so I wanted to "fight" it first, get the pain over with, lol.

As far as strategy goes, I'm going to continue to paint all the faces, then work the torsos, then work all the kilts, and then those dreaded socks, HA! I'm a little anal retentive when it comes to keeping the momentum going. I have had burnout many times, but I've always seemed to keep the focus, at least so far. I will admit that last set of figures with those Denison smocks were a challenge. Since painting faces are not by strong point, I have to keep the mental groove flowing as long as possible, which is why I'll knock them all out in sequence, keep the learning curve small. I'm having a lot of fun with this set, just like the last Arnhem set, so as long as the fun is happenin, I'll keep Ruckin On. I already told my pretty little woman I would be continuing to paint through the summer, a first actually, so I'll see how that goes. Thanks again, BP.

Thank you, Kevin. Ya, I was a bit surprised myself, lol. I've got Daria's video running in a loop, gotta keep those principals in mind while working these faces. I don't do them all the time.

Bag Piper Face Work

One thing I’ve noticed since getting back to this smaller scale is the fact that if I didn’t have super small brushes and a decent pair of readers I’d be in trouble. I’ve been able to get some seriously small details taken care of without too much difficulty. So, when time comes to get back to them big boys, Large Scale figures, I won’t have any excuses for overlooking any minute details, none whatsoever.

Moving right along, the Bag Piper’s face is pretty much set for now. There are a few areas I will adjust, but for right now I’ll let him set up. These eyes are so big I just may have to put pupils in, or maybe not. These are super close-up pics, so it looks a bit odd right now.

Ok, nine more to go before we tackle those kilts. Cheers, Ski.
