Mat - the braid is NMM (ochre, naples yellow and ivory) with a wash of sepia and then gold ink. The buttons are Sargents gold with sepia ink. Chinscales are Sargents gold, highlighted ivory and washed with diluted sepia ink. The sword is based black with Sargents silver, as well as sepia and silver inks on top of ivory paint for the blade etching.

I'm not surprised progress is quick. I did this recently myself and the quality is that good the painting aspect just flowed. You're doing a good job there mate.

It is a relatively easy figure to paint. Lots of grey and oxford blue. First shades applied to the greatcoat. The photography has made the trousers look almost dry brushed. Not sure what's up with that.

Hi Colin,

Fast and effective. Excellent job. I wish I was prolific as you.

Cheers,

Patrick

Keep going the way you are. I too have little enthusiasm for g-work - neccessary evil though. Most people depict him in snow - I did.....

I was looking forward to doing some snow. Lady Butler's picture of the Guards in their post-Inkerman roll call shows lots. But after research including looking at other period illustrations and reading Kinglake, it seems that Inkerman was fought in light rain and cold mist. No snow that day. Snow is certainly accurate for other days in the Fall of 1854 though.
