Painted in acrylics, I started this before Christmas and painted it inbetween stages of the 120mm lancer. I've painted the white three times, so any tips that anyone can give on shading this colour would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Looks really cool! White is always a challenge to paint - well, for me anyway... ;)

Re. tips for painting white, I found Mark Bannerman's technique (over at M-L) quite useful... the only change I made was to use Sepia for the shadows...

Again, really nice figure... I've liked it ever since seeing the "Lepar Knights" vignette... can't remember who did it...

Cheers

Rudi :)

Roc,

Your wish is my command - attached another pic. The eyes look a little oriental, even though I've followed the casting as well as I can. It was hard to paint the face as it's closely covered by the helmet & cloth; but that's no excuse for any errors on my part!

Glad the white turned out ok, I tried a brownish colour for shading, but it pretty awful, hence the repaints!

OOPS - just noticed the bad clean-up job on the inside of the shield - I looked all over this figure before taking the pics and didn't spot this!

You ask about painting whites in acrylics, well my answer would be don't use white! I often paint with Citadel acrylics but find the white too bright, chalky and occasionally unstable when watered down. I paint whites using a succession of layers of grey from darkest to lightest. This way the warrior's uniform looks suitably weathered and grubby and it looks white; that's the illusion of colour in scale! I've even painted female clothing this way and it still looks white.

Love the green. Did you use a palette for that? Whatever your blend, it looks awesome--very realistic. Nice job.

Thanks for the compliment Kyle. The green is Vallejo 'bright green' from the Napoleonic paint set, mixed with white for the base coat and then glazed with thinned full strength paint.

Hi Dave

i do not paint with acrylics anymore. When i used two i never used pure white. I always started with a mixture of white and a bit of red leather (from the vallejo range).

for the highlights i was adding more white and for the shadows more red leather. Extreme highlights with pure white.

hopw i helped you!!!!
