I finally began to start painting the pony today. I started with a base coat of titanium white, black and magenta-violet mixture. I am hoping for a dapple when this done. However, this is going to be much harder than I had anticipated. The pics below represent three hours of trying out different approaches, needlees to say there will many more hours to come. I would greatly appreciate any guidance, tips or comments.

A Few More

I began to add a little ochre and some "spots." The mane looks like gold in the pic but it is the first coat of ocher + the base. Any suggestions?

Looks good so far Rocky. I can't really critique what you are doing because it is not a process I use. I paint all my horses in enamels.

Once the oils dry I will spay it with dull cote and finish with enamels for the detail work. I think I will try the airbrush for the next horse!

Rocky,

Gericault horse is much more yellowish than your approach. Probably the painting is too much yellow but if you want to follow it you have to use more mars yellow in your basic colour. Normally we have in mind that white horses are white… that isn’t true. Frequently they have more warm skin.
My suggestion is to use a mix of mars yellow, raw umber and some ivory black highlighted with a “yellow white”. Don’t use pure titanium white.

to understand better the job take a picture as the painting, you will show the figure as in the painting and is better that you take the habit to see it as in the panting,

hoping to have helped ( or maybe confused…)

I was not going by the painting as it is too difficult to tell what the original color of the horse was. I am just trying to get a dapple look, but I will follow your advice and try again.

Rocky

Since I am still undecided about what to do with the horse paint scheme, I decided to paint some of the accessories to check for contrast. I will do a little more tomorrow before I decide. BTW, the orange on the Leopard is model masters clear orange and it is very thin. I used it to get an idea for the final color and the area I want to paint. It will not be used in the final mix.
Now I understand why most of you just paint figures without horses!

Don't worry - the end result will be well worth it. Just hang on in there.
What you will probably find is that after a day or two the oils will change very slightly in how they appear. So do not panic.
Also, it may help to divert your attention away to the rider for a bit and then come back fresh... just a suggestion.

I painted the base coat of the bridle and leather (cant wait for the bridle detail) and base for the leopard. This being my first metal kit, I have learned a great deal and I look forward to the next one (five on the shelf). As always, any advice will be greatly appreciated.
