Stefano has sent me an addendum to his original article on the military musicians,I just translated and posted it for your pleasure.
I would like to add to the article regarding the musicians.
Every Regiment had its own squad of musicians during the battles.
The sound of musical instruments , was the only system available back then to impart orders without being seen ,in very precarious situations.
The music could be heard above the loud noises of gun fire and cannon shots .
These gallant soldiers and musicians were also given instructions in the field of medicine, in fact they were utilized to tend to the wounded along with the regular medical assistants.
Knowing this ,it enlightens my understanding of fighting in the front lines.
