A day to remember, a day to feel proud, we're English and British and god save the Queen , best regards to all my fellow couuntrymen

Hi Anders.

You've heard of St. George and the Dragon? St. George is the patron saint of England.
Anyway, the old flag of England is the red cross on a white background, which is known as St. George's cross.

So this is the day they celebrate St. George. If I'm not mistaken St. Andrew's day is pretty soon (the Scottish flag is the cross of St. Andrew).

I'm not sure of the significance of St. George for England, but I'm sure someone else can fill you in! And as I mentioned earlier, St. George's day got no press at all in Scotland (for obvious reasons).

hi all. the myth and legands go on for ever, to cut it short he was made patron sait of soldiers in 1098 after appearing to soldiers fighting in the crusades. when the lion heart was fighting in palastine in 1191 he put the army under the protection of st. george.he held the rank of tribune in the roman army and was beheaded for condeming romes treatment of the christians thus the red cross on a white background is the symbol of a martyr. early maps show the america's india and africa as being populated by dragons so the church used st. george as the christian slaying the pagan dragon in his quest to bring the church there. all myth but good old stuff. dave.

There's a lot of conjecture as to who he actually was. Believed to have been born in the region known as modern day Palestine. He's also patron saint of Portugal, and about three other countries, including I believe, Malta. I await 'experts' correcting me!
All the best!
