Hi guys ,

BOS always a touchy subject no doubt the winner was a great bit of modelling but for me this superb flat by Rick Taylor from Canada should have got it ...simply stunning

I looked at this VERY carefully, and it certainly is a masterful painting, but it did not actually appear to be a cast flat figure, although someone may be able to tell us different. So,yes, it was flat, but so is any other painted picture. I'm no longer sure what criterions the judges employ, and certainly glad that I don't compete.

Hi Alan ,

You raise a good point there it didn't look like a flat , but great painting , he also had another very small piece in there of a prince ...that was nice .

Like you say heavan knows the criteria employed by judges ...in any of the classes ...judging must be so difficult and thankless at times

PS Good to speak to you as well

After seeing the 3 that were shortlisted for BOS i wouldn't have been dissapointed if any one of the 3 had won BOS.They all had their pros and cons, but i wouldn't have liked to be judging them.

Was Jesus Gamarra's BOS piece based on a painting as well, or is it an original idea?

I believe an important criterium for BOS is that the piece should have 'emotion'. As great as I find The Death of Major Peirson piece, it is a reproduction of a painting, albeit very skilled. In that sense I applaud the judges' courage to go for the piece they awarded.... Unless that one is also based on a painting.
I also do like that the BOS does not have waving flags. That started to be another 'BOS criterion'...

Cheers,
Adrian

It is beautifully executed, but subjectively I prefer the King Charles piece . Mind you, since I wouldn't presume to put anything in the Euro comp, mine is not a valid opinion :(.

I'm led to believe out of the 35 judges who voted for BOS there was only 3 votes the difference from the next one

I was quite surprised when I saw the BoS but the more I looked at it the more I got to like it. It is based on a painting but there is a lot more to it than the original; there are some really nice elements to it. I don't think any of the photographs of it will do it justice, it deffinately needs to be seen in the flesh. Still not sure if I like it more than 'The Death of Major Pierson' though.

As someone who is only looking on as a very interested bystander, without having seen the pieces in person but having enjoyed the photos, I've got to say how amazing it is to see a situation where such brilliant pieces of figure modelling have been vying for BOS.....wonderful stuff.
All of them wonderful pieces of art.

The other fascinating aspect I've noticed this year is the absence of the usual annual comment "well that was the worst Euro ever" remark or the continually reoccurring "Euro's nothing like it used to be".
Still looks pretty amazing to me.

Similar points of discussion have been raised within the Flat Figure community.
Gerry Larkin, who was one of the category judges and Nicholas Ball both give interesting insights and information on the piece.

Thanks for the clarification and link,Del, that clears it up in my book. Someone who can engrave then paint a miniature to that standard so beautifully certainly deserves the highest praise. True artistry, encompassing several skills, it was quite breathtaking.

Cheers,
Alan

My take on it exactly Alan (y) What we have here is craftsmanship as well as artistry of the highest order.
So much more than a metal or resin blank shape painted by a skilled fine art painter.
Cheers
