Well there it is, trust. Most people in this world are trustworthy. I can suspect the whole world of being a bunch of scam artists, and live in suspicion of everybody. Or, I can simply go with trust, which has only let me down once.

Unethical people are out there. But if you begin to act like nobody is trustworthy, then you begin to attract that kind of thing to you. Your suggestions are fine, I guess. But they just stretch out a process that can be more easily handled in a timely manner among mutually trusting individuals.

For instance, I worked with Taesung without a net, even though I had only just met him. Everything turned out fine and he is an honorable person to work with. One loser guy in twenty years. I am not going to lose any sleep over that.

But it would be nice to have a casting of that figure. That is the only loss that amounts to much in the long run.

T50 , I can understand how frustrating it must have been dealing with such individuals of low integrity and morals. Due to the fact that we have women and minors who frequent the planet on a daily base, I must ask you to please not use inappropriate language. I think you have much class for that.

Thanks in advance for your co-operation.

Roc.

Mike, These suggestion are for those that would rather err on the side of caution. If you make your living doing this sort of thing then time is money, in both the time it takes to do a project as well as the time to get a return on your work.~Gary

Hello Gents,

What I wrote earlier is just the way I buy masters from artists,
and it's mentioned to the artists prior to work begins. If it's agreed,
a deal happens. If not, no big deal. :)

A. Send pictures and ask for payment upon completion. Once the money arrives ship the figure and sit on the money until the client sends and Email, phone call what have you acknolwedging acceptance of the master.
Sometimes, the figure looks and feels slightly different in person.
Pics can show distorted images of a figure.
Also, how the parts fit together should be tested in person.
For me, accurate fitting of all parts is more important than fine details.
After all, it's a kit to be built.

B. Ask for half of the money up front and the remainder upon completion and acceptance of the master.
That's exactly how I got ripped off. I placed an order for 2 figures
and paid for one up front...!

I agree that certain things should be mentioned and agreed clearly
even if you are dealing with close friends...

I recently forfilled a commission for a figure where the customer had paid in advance and then all things that could possibly go **** up happened in my life!
This meant that comms were down and my paying customer would righteously get the raving hump over where his payed for figure was!
He eventualy got the figure and was very pleased with it.
Communication is an important point to bear in mind!
I just sent some masters off to someone and have just also learned that the UK Post Office are holding some 'One day'strikes!!!
Jimmy Hoffa-you can't stay still can you!!!!:)

I guess that unforseen events and circumstances are not the same as someone deliberately setting out to rip off an innocent party.
S**t happens!!!!

Hey Pete,

Well, stuff does happen, eh? That is why I do not generally take money up front. Sometimes I will do this with a new client. But this is just if they are an unknown quantity. Once they have shown themselves to be honorable, I go back to payment on reciept of the job.

The problem with taking money up front is that you now OWE the person you took money from. What if you get abducted by aliens? What if the freakin' figure becomes such a nightmarish piece of codgewollop that all you want to do is see it's backside going down your cylindrical file?

Then you are left holdin' your junk with nothing to offer the fellow who just gave you their money. That money is now hanging over your head like the sword of Domocles. What's worse, even if you do finally come through with the goods, you have already been paid and you get nothing at the end of the job. The money is spent and you are left again, with nothing in your hand but your bunched chub. That blows.

Honesty and straight-up business practices are the best way to go. Most people in this world are quite honorable and considerate of problems as long as you are honest and, as you said, communicate when you have difficulties. Sometimes taking money up front is just asking for troubles. I avoid it most of the time.

Besides, you never know when those creepy aliens might drop by.......!

Hey Mike,

You're talking about a species on the verge of extinction.

Of course you wouldn't know it unless, like me, you were TAKEN .

Welcome to the brave new world!
