As he is in palace/parade dress, I am going to put him on an ornate hand painted carpet. I have several photos of authentic Napoleonic ones in Osenat auction catalogues. Some are stupidly complex in design. I will need to decide how ornate to go.

Colin
Looking forward to see what design will make it!
Cheers,
Zeno

I would like to do the first one below but I don't think anyone would believe it was actually a Napoleonic rug - its amazing!. So may be the second one. Whichever I choose I will only be doing a small portion of the rug under my guy.

Colin, where did you find the Napoleonic rugs? I had the same idea but cheated and printed a portion of one I found on the Net which looked old and French. (I know this will appal the purists!)
Jeff

Jeff - I put all these up as I thought someone might want them as reference. I have a pile of old Osenat de Fontainebleau auction catalogues. They do a Napoleonic sale about twice a year and publish a full colour several hundred page glossy catalogue that would put many publishers to shame - letters, weapons, furniture, medals, decor, paintings, uniforms etc. A couple of of years ago they sold Napoleon's sword worn at Marengo with a reserve of half a million Euro as I recall. This has the top class stuff that multi-millionaires bid on (needless to say I have never bought anything). My friend at work calls their catalogue "antiques porn." Anyway they are great reference tools.

You can download pdfs of their past catalogues for the last few years here. http://www.osenat.fr/html/calendrier.jsp?t=p Not everyone is Napoleonic though. I didn't realise these pdfs were there until I looked for you so I will repost in the general figure section.

Colin

Jeff - no probs and happy to share. I also posted in General figure talk and added 3 direct links to specific catalgues as the Napoleonic ones are not always easily ID'd from their list, particularly for non-French speakers. I recall a few years ago I needed a particular photo of a particular order of chivalry for my Ney figure (as I recall the Order of Christ of Portugal). Couldn't find it anywhere so I hit the catalogues and there it was.

Hey Colin
These are awesome references. As for painting them...:nailbiting: Wow, you've set yourself up for some late nights and alot of swearing. If I had to pick, I like the one... the black and pink job. My grandmother had one with a similar pattern in her diningroom years ago.

I wish you luck with this job

Holy Macaroni, Colin! I'm with you, mate! This is a task, no joke! Whatever you will choose, is not easy! This is what I'm calling a challange.... Will follow closely... Keep the windows open, my friend... just in case you feel the need to cool down...

Breeches done - Base Vallejo US tan earth - shaded with USA olive drab and Golden (brand) raw umber. Highlighted with Vallejo dark sand and ivory mixed into base in varying quantities. I like the mousey brown/grey shade to the doe skin breeches rather than the overly yellow I have gotten in the past.

Boots are now undercoated with a mix of liquitex professional paints - black + raw umber + ochre + light flesh. Using these paints as they have more of a sheen than Vallejos, hopefully resulting in a finish more like boot leather. Experimenting as I go.

Here's my selected rug segment. I like the colours, the detail and the Napoleonic symbol. Thanks to Herr wife for showing "Mr. Technology" how to cut circles out of a jpg with an older version of paintshop pro!

Scale is 90mm, so isn't so bad, size vise. I'm with you, mate! The round wood base is the one that you purchased in Hamilton?
I'm sure it will look super. Keep us posted!

Starting the terrifying carpet. You will see that I am using the photo as an inspiration only. There is no way I am painting very shade and shape in that thing! But so far so good I think. This is about one and a half hours work.

Zeno - he has been on this base for about 10 years, so no its not the Hamilton one.
