Having just put to bed a bust, I promised myself I'd paint a "proper" figure next:whistle: . This piece was an early Christmas present from the mem 'sahib - first figure she has ever bought me, so I have to do it justice or me and the dog will be spending a lot of time together!
It is the excellent "Southern Pride" figure from FeR's Fahrenheit series, which could, at a stretch, be painted to represent George Pickett, as it looks a bit like him. Here's the kit:

Detail is excellent, as expected from this respected manufacturer. I decided to start the head/face today. Here is the head detail:

I treated myself to a set of Scale 75 Flesh tones a couple of weeks ago, so this was an ideal opportunity to give them a try. I normally paint faces in oils but the only way to get yer' head around acrylics for faces is to give it a go. Two hours this afternoon resulted in this:

I always seem to gravitate to "ginger" for Johnny Reb - that said, I thought it worked OK for this chap.
Thanks for looking in. I'm going to enjoy this one.(y)

Off to a great start, face looking good. I have been toying with the idea of getting some Scale 75 artist acrylics so will be interested to see how you get on with them.

Hi Phil as Graham says off to a great start (y)

Face looks fab and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this one coming along
(I was really taken with the FeR figure I completed just before Christmas and currently am working on a few others which came along at Christmas too)
Cheers
Paul

ps - as you say acrylics take a bit of getting used to coming from an oil background, but the slightly slower drying time of the new Scale 75 tubes means that you can use them in a similar kind of way which helps

Thanks Paul. Yes, I was well impressed with your Iron Brigade figure. I can see me picking off a few more of these over the next few months. I did notice the S75 tube acrylic dries a little slower, which is a good point. It has strong pigment too, not lost among the binder you get in AV and Andrea.

Have a good New Year!

Nice looking figure Phil, a proper figure too (Nap might say different).
Great start.

Thanks very much Bob. I have warmed just a bit to busts but my main enthusiasm has always been for 54/75 full figures. I dunno, busts seem to have taken centre spot in the years I've been away from the hobby, and some are very good, some aren't. The current trend for overly dynamic/dramatic ones I find unattractive. A single figure can tell a story that a bust never will.

Interesting you should say about busts and figures. I have just about cleared what is left of my stash and am looking to where I go from here. There are many busts that I like the look of but they are becoming so expensive that I am considering how to keep the hobby going on limited finances and the obvious answer is to go smaller, busts or figures. Only issue with that is I find smaller figures very difficult. I have one 1/10 scale bust left and it is a real beauty but I think it may be my last.

Great start there Phil, that head looks spot on. I'm a big fan of FeR figures and have quite a few. Although not this one (yet).

I know where you are coming from Graham. I too have a limited hobby budget, which I split between figures/kits and shooting. Being retired is a two-edged sword in a way. Plenty of time to do stuff, less income to afford to do it, so I tend to be very selective. I'd recommend trying a decent 54mm figure and see how that grabs your enthusiasm. You may be surprised.(y)

Yeah, pension doesn’t go far does it lol. Just been looking through some 54mm on El Greco site and what did I spot and really like the look of? A chap in a kilt....... give me strength, I am my own worst enemy :ROFLMAO:

Must admit these FeR pieces are looking very sculpts

Following this with interest

Happy benchtime

Afternoon all. I managed a couple of hours at the bench this afternoon. I have pretty well finished the head and am relatively pleased with the result, although I may re-visit the rank bars on the collar.
Face palette - all Scale 75. Base coat 50/50 Pink Flesh and Basic Flesh. First highlight 50/50 Basic Flesh and Golden Skin. First shadow Pink Flesh/Indian Shadow. Deep shadow Indian Shadow/African Shadow. Top highlight 50/50 Pale Skin/Light Skin. Eyes done with AV Off White and a little Buff. Hair is AV mixture of Saddle Brown, Amaranth Red and Dark Earth, Amaranth predominant. Highlighted with main mix plus AV Buff. Washed over with AV Game Color Sepia Shade.
Here's a quick dodgyvision pic of progress:
Conf head 2.jpg

I cleaned up the main body parts (which didn't take long) and drilled the right foot for a brass rod to attach it to the base. I also attached the right arm - this is cleverly sculpted to fit under the folds of the overcoat. I had to use some jiggery-pokery to glue it whilst not glueing the overcoat in place yet - I want to paint that separately as there is some "chicken guts" on the sleeve which will otherwise be a ball-ache to paint. Off now to dig out Troiani for some further reference!

Phil

Face is spot on Phil, thanks for the colour mixes to. Glad you are enjoying the FeR experience and not stood outside my door with a pitchfork and blazing torch ;)
