In onion's defence "does he have one " I noted a recent opinion on NMM technique's where he stated that you can do this technique without the designated paint sets ,and he is Bloody right :D

People join site & forums, stay for a while and then drift away for whatever reason. Happens all the time. I've even done it myself. Maybe he just got bored, or got "forum fatigue". Who knows? Who cares?

If he comes back, fine by me. If he doesn't come back that's fine by me as well. pF will continue with or without him, no individual member is "bigger than the site". I hadn't even noticed his absence until I read this thread.

I don't know the guy and have no strong feelings or opinions about him one way or the other, aside from agreeing with some of the other sentiments expressed above that he seemed to be more of a 'theorist' than a 'practitioner' who actually put his models where his 'virtual' mouth was.

Sent him a personal email this morning. Its a shame the way this thread has developed over a simple question! Anything could have happened to the man! lots of things go on in peoples lives and I don't think its fair to start tearing people apart in public especially when they are not in a position to defend themselves or we know the real reason behind their absence. Just think how bad you would feel coming back to this forum after a break for whatever reason and reading all these comments about yourself! I don't think I would be coming back again. for good.......

Also looks awful to new and existing members looking in on this, does not set a good impression of the PF community in my eyes.

Although it is probably wiser to leave it at what Tommi said, I do like to add one more thing: there are quite a few comments that suggest one has to show work before contributions are taken seriously. I don't think it is very relevant if you show your work or not. Einion used to bring in-depth info about colour theory which is inherently 'theoretical'; that doesn't make it less valuable, and seeing (judging?) his work is not required to decide if you take the info on-board or not.

Suggesting that one should show own work before being taken seriously may keep quite a few passive PF members from contributing actively. There are different ways to contribute, showing own work is just one of them.

Besides, Einion actually did show his work: responding to other such comments he pointed out that his various avatar pictures were of his work. Top notch work in my opinion.

I hope Tommi's email gets a response, and that nothing serious is behind Einions absence.

Cheers,
Adrian

Adrian - I think the undercurrent behind the "show your work" comments is a bit more than it just being a prerequisite to taking part in the site. I have never detected any such theme here and I think most members would say you don't have to show your work to take part (although there is a lot of value to the modeller and others if you do so).

But I have seen various situations (and his is in no way focused on any specific member) here where certain participants freely and severely criticized others' work or added unasked for advice without ever posting their own and exposing it to similar criticism. That seems to rub up against many members' instincts of what constitutes fair play. If one is to present oneself as a self appointed expert, there is a certain value in establishing credentials.

I seen his work twice in person and met him at a MMSI Show many years ago. His work was very good and had some sculpted pieces entered also. Like most people, his demeanor in person was not like his online persona.

Some very good painters don't show their work because they don't feel like they can take decent photos of it. I personally know of at least one guy who has been active on here that does gold medal winning work but doesn't post because of his photos. He's still got a wealth of knowledge to share. Not sure about Einion's reasons (and I always assumed the work on his profile pick was his... goes for most people, if you post a figure in your profile pick I'm going to assume it's something you did).

That being said, I understand the kick back on commenting but not showing your work. It can rub people the wrong way. If I've never seen your work then I might be a bit more skeptical of your comments. But if the advice is good/helpful then what do I care?

I for one am not a photographer.Don't even have a good camera for the proper setup.Never cared to be on Facebook.Never gave advice only compliments and admiration for others work.Have been painting for maybe three years;my wife thinks I'm good but who is she to say.
Every time I asked for advice or info Einion never failed to answer.I do have plans to get a good camera and work on a setup and hesitantly get on facebook.
I thought a simple question would get a simple answer.I was obviously wrong.Still think PF is the best.....Regards......Wayne

Wayne - re your Facebook comment - there seems to be a growing figure modelling community on Facebook. Great networking, communication and learning opportunities. There are a lot of annoying aspects to FB but I see this as a growing opportunity for show reports, photo trading and banter.

It's quite simple to me if you tell me the best way to paint chain mail is green with pink spots unless I see proof I am not likely to believe it. There are very many top quality artists on here and those I try to emulate all without fail not only have pictures of their work but have not proffessed that theirs is the only way or that they are infallible. And every single one of them without fail have been nothing but helpful with advice and worthwhile criticism.

If his avatars were his own work, that blows the "can't take good photos" theory clean out of the water. Just seems a bit strange to me that someone would only bother to post an avatar of their work. If you're going to do that, then surely it's not such a big next step to post up some decent sized photos of the whole figure. To back up your musings (a picture being worth 1000 words and all that).

I liked the man, bit like saying where is Bill H.
Enion never came across bad to me, I knew of him years ago and a very very talented painter
Pick up a mil mod of the 90s onwards, a regular gold medal winner
His surname started with an R :) I think, if the same man
And I have never met him or spoke to him, so 100% impartial
His avatar showed his work. We sometimes all come across wrong when typed words but we frequent because we all care
