Hi

I assume that Elephant eyes work in the same way as Horse eyes, for the purposes of painting. I’m working on RPs elephant and want to paint his eyes showing fear. I know horse eyes roll back in their sockets when they are frightened and I’m assuming elephants would too. I have painted them both rolled back but I’m not convinced it’s correct. I can’t find any reference for either elephants or horses showing fear with both eyes shown ie a shot from the front of the head rather than the side.

If anyone has a good ref photo or if any horse painting experts or anyone with better animal knowledge knows what both eyes should look like I would really appreciate it.

Cheers

Neil

Hmmm - Looks a bit 'photoshopped' to me LH.
I'd certainly like to see the photo coming from a primary source (zoo/wildlife site etc) before making any decisions about using it for a reference/proof. It's definitely a tricky question Neil.

Think you need to try and get a Photo of a charging bull , more enraged than frightened

Think I’m sorted just found this

Whilst it doesn’t look very scared or angry it does show how the eyes move together

Hi Neil,
I'm currently working on a 120mm horse project and have been doing a bit of reading on this subject and not sure it applies to elephants but I found this simple answer....."Horses and mules move their eyes independently, allowing them to see objects in two different directions at once. Their eyes protrude slightly from the sides of the head, allowing panoramic vision that measures about 350 degrees". Those aren't my words but it appears to be the fact looking at your elephant pic as the eyes focus seems to be slightly varied. I'm finding this subject to be somewhat interesting because I never thought about that before.

Cheers Wayne

Really helpful, I have gone with something similar to the pic and it seems to have worked. I guess hardly anyone paints horses these days as compared to the 70s when our mainstay included lots of Historex Cavalry figures. Hence I don’t think we are as clued up on such things as animal eyes. There is surprisingly little on the web either. Good luck with the figure!

Regards

Neil
