I am working on the Quintus Sertorius bust by El Viejo and wanted to see what everyone thought about catch-light in the eyes. I have seen it on some and not others busts. Think I should put them in? Also, do you use pure white or an off white? Thanks for all of your comments. Sean

Hi Sean

I would put them in. I do the same when I paint busts or greater figures. I use titanium white for it, but you can use an off white too. I set the light when the colour of the eye is not dry (I use oil colours)

HI Sean
A friend of mine uses silver for the catch light and it works very well
I personally now do not put catch light in I use a clear gloss varnish after the eye colour has dried well and this seems to give a natural catch light from all angles
This is a nice bust good luck with it
Cheers

Sean,

I vote against catch lights. They are a two dimensional solution to a three dimensional problem.

The best solution, and the one I always use, even on 54mm figures is to paint the eyes with gloss clear. This needs to be applied smoothly and should not "spill" over onto the eyelids. It is better to apply a couple of coats (allow for drying in between).

The advantage to using gloss is that any catch light that occurs will happen naturally. And, of course, it will match your light source because the light source will be causing it. This only rarely happens with painted catch lights.

Cheers!!

Mike

I did one bust with the catch light and one without.
Untill this day i will repaint the eye with the catchlight. It seems unnatural.
When you look from another direction the catchlight will stay one his place. Looks crazy.
