In all serious after a lot of thought I have to say this I'm not sure if it's even technically military but eh sue me

I'd be more than happy to chip off a lump of Sevastapol cannon and fashion a medal myself for anyone game enough to tell that Red Cossack that he's fat or any of his mates for that matter.
But here's one I reckon is a fabulous depiction of battle it's an 8 metre ( 26 ft ) panel depicting the Battle of Osaka Castle by Kuroda Nagamasa for the Togugawa clan 1615 ~

I guess my favorite paintings would include Lady Butler's "Scotland Forever" and Detaille's pictures of the Grenadiers a Cheval at Eylau/ charge of hussars (often appearing as an etching in history books). Also have always liked many of R. Caton Woodville's paintings.

I think the painting represents a last stand type of scene, so the figure of the Chasseur, along with what I think is HIS broken rifle on the floor, is meant to show the hopelessness of the situation, and the inevitability of the surrender which must surely follow. (not bad eh? All those courses in Art history finally paying off;))

Hi Del,
Firstly great post, the one that always sticks with me is John Everett Millais - The Release Order 1746. Mind Lady Butler has knocked a few good ones out.
cheers

Hey, I think I know that dog and I'm not happy she's been moonlighting posing for someone else.
