Hi everyone

I was lucky enough to be asked by Mick Ankim after he had released the last in his Irish series if I’d like some bits and bobs ....oh go on then

The parcel arrived so after more tooing and froing between Mick and me .......I decided I wanted to add some rank and badges in order to do a version of this but change the actual pipes to the Brian Boru version where all the drones are on one block. in the shape of a triangle. The bass Drone is agaist the chest & shoulder the two tenors in fron either side. Blow pipe remains in same position

Pipe Major. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers circa 1925/30

The original version that Mick released

Work carried out :

I only had the lower half’s of the arms in the box received so using heavy wire I “eventually” built the upper arms ...(I hasten to add I am not or ever will be a sculptor) ....this was done many times with the bin being filled up with hardened putty and wrongly cut wire

Once I was fairly happy with arms I added Pipe Majors Badges

I reworked the actual Pipe bag to have the new fitting point and adjusted the fit into position

Detailed up the chanter

Added new collar badges

Added the belt decoration

Replaced the shoulder arcs with just epaulettes

Added a fringe

Reshaped the cuffs and added new buttons

Added a plume

Removed the sporran sculpted and replaced with a badger version as reference

There is a banner but thinking to leave off

A sort of Piccy SBS ...click on for larger images! ...if you wish

Wow, nice one Kev you don't mess about when you get one of these projects on the go, great job so far looking forward to the paint.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon ...should be interesting , positioning the pipes will be interesting after painting everything else ...I’ve dry fitted them ...no issues there but want to add at least cords and tassels possibly ribbons IF I can get the look right !

Well, Kevin, it's no longer buttons and medals for you, buddy. You did a great job sculpting. Very well done, Brother!

Thank you .......think I might stick to just detailing !

Looking great! No medals though? I'm disappointed in you :D
Scotty.

Sorry Scotty ....need to check out the war service of the unit and you never know might add the WW1 trio .......lets see !

UPDATE: Had a look , found this KIA from 13th Bn , not a piper as such , he has a moustache! but this bust would be a nice tribute to him ...could add the 3 medals

Be rude not to
Scotty.

Why do I do this to myself! ....don’t want to be rude ...lol

Agree. Set of three would look good, Also add a tad of colour on the French Grey.
Mick

Your right there Mick would they just be on the cloth over shoulder ( apologies to Scotty ..can’t remember the correct name ! ) ...

..and would they be court mounted or hanging loose ?

Me and my big mouth....LOL

The medals will be fine on the Shawl. ( Cloth over the shoulder).
As for Court mounted I'm not so sure. The widow at Windsor instigated it as she didn,t like the sound of the Officers at court medals clinking about.
Hence Court Mounted.
As for O/R or senior NCO's having theirs Court mounted I cant say. But if not in the 1920/30 They would have been attached in this case to a three bar pin See pic.
In this era I dont think they would be pinned on willy nilly.

Hi Mick

No willy nilly from me ......won’t do them court mounted .....atm .....the bar won’t show under ribbons where fitted

Thanks for info

Found a post WW1 set ....court mounted3909B634-09DE-41B5-91CC-35BC950BC481.jpeg ....will sit better on the folds of the shawl ......any thoughts welcome

That piece of material is probably a fly plaid, they're not very substantial. Our drummers wore them but medals were worn on the chest. I'll see if I can find a picture somewhere. I do think the medals will look good and you're great at them. All the best.
Scotty.

He’s wearing a fly plaid, you can see it’s just a scrap of material at the front with the bulk hanging down the back. It doesn’t look like there’s any space on your guy. Good luck

Looks workable Kev, maybe drop them a bit lower on the chest as well. As the plaid pin is only secured by the pin the edge of the medal ribbon could sit under it slightly. Is it a case of the old saying "here's your medal now go get a chest to pin ot on".

Cheers Simon
