Gettysburg's Slaughter Pen has a new look

For those that have traveled to Gettysburg over the past few years you may have noticed something different about the field. The National Park Service has been in the process of removing large areas of trees that were NOT present during the battle. This is how the Slaughter Pen (across from Devil's Den) looks today. The small restroom building is now out in the open. By removing the trees we are able to see the field as it may have looked in July 1863.~Gary

Brian, It will be even more of a treat visiting the battlefield with all of the tree removal that has taken place thus far. There are now a number of areas where you will no longer have to imagine areas without trees and undergrowth.~Gary

I'm looking forward to it. I'll leave my wife and younger kids in the hotel and walk about the battlefield with my eldest son. What's the weather like there in October.

Weather in S Central PA in October

this is very early on in fall. Chances are you are going to have some REALLY great weather, maybe see some really great foliage. Look for highs in the upper 70's, but, the mornings can be verry nippy.... You have picked a very good time to go, no massive crowds, no sweltering heat.

I have only been there once, and it was on the way home from the MFCA show. As a matter of fact, I think Gary was with us.....

Jason, I'm a little bummed out to say the least, sorry the annual tradition has to be shelved for this year. With proms, graduation, and a graduation party coming soon, and for twins no less, funds need to be diverted elsewhere. Julie and I think we may be able to squeek out a 3-4 day weekend there by ourselves after the dust settles.~Gary

There is a chance of running into school kids on end of year trips. Nothing more pleasant than being in the visitor's center when it's overrun with hundreds of kids...hooray!

Jim, Yeah I think I was there we stopped for lunch and a brief (to say the least) stop at Little Round Top. You sure can't beat the view.~Gary
