No worries (y)

I appreciate the detailed response. I am thinking my flesh mix is too pink with the burnt sienna and liquitex deep portrait pink as an acrylic base.

I am also thinking my Winsor Newton inexpensive oils is not the best.

I may post a topic asking you folks what brand of oils you are using and why.

Again. lovely work so far. I am looking for an old guard fig myself but don't want to do yet another VL!

Cheers!

Keith

Yes burnt Sienna can lead to "Dreaded Pumpkin Head Disease". It can make things too orange.

Try-Sennelier (sp?) Flesh Ochre+W&N Mars Brown+W&N Cad Red+W&N Cad Yellow+W&N Titanium White.

I either use Tit white, Naples Yellow or Juane Brilliant (All W&N) to highlight.
I sometimes also use Burnt Umber and Terra Rosa for shadows.

Lou-

Thx. I have been using WN FLESH+Burnt sienna+ Tit white+touch of gold ochre.

Lemme give this others a try!

Keith

Lou,
What a great mix!
I'll give it a try...very interesting blend...
Bob Knee has been beating me up about trying Juane Brilliant for my highlights...I guess the base mix kinda cuts the starkness of Juane Brilliant and brings it in more subtle highlight... is that about right, Lou?
Again, thanks for all the help and patience...

Patrick

Patrick,

Either Jaune Brilliant or Naples Yellow works. White, when used as a highlight has a tendency to dull the whole face. I only use white as the very highest highlight now and do the rest with Jaune Brilliant. The terra rosa tones down the "yellowness" of the Jaune.

I could show you, but explaining the mix is rather difficult. PLay around with it and see what you get.

Lou

Patrick and Lou -

Very good exchange guys. I don't want to hijack the conversation but I will give the terra rosa and jaune brilliant a try.

I find that using the white as any other than tippy top highlights to give a "clown" mask effect. I had been using a flesh base+tit white as a sort of mid tone highlight. These combo's look more appealing! Thx!

Keith

Well, until Gordy put's in emoticon of a face spitting raspberry this will have to do

"PPPPhtttt...."

Keith

Lou,
I am going to try that mix...you talk about a flesh ochre, what is that?

All the best my friend...

Patrick

Patrick,

Check out this link. It should take you to Dick Blick artist supply and the Sennelier oil range.

Flesh ochre is a reasonable facsimile to human flesh. I wouldn't use it alone, but when mixed with other colors, it does pretty well. It's just another weapon in your arsenal.

Although there are those who make do with 5 tubes of oil paint, I'm one of those obsessive compulsives who has to have ever color I can get my hands on. I probably have more oils than the Louvre! Never use 'em but I like trying new stuff.

Aha. Thanks. Well, I have it too, and I've been "playing" a bit with this colour - seems to me that by "adjusting" with burnt sienna and yellow ochre, etc. you can get a fine flesh base colour with that one too...

Johann,

I stopped using Burnt sienna except around the eyelids because it often led to "dreaded pumpkin head disease" and has a tendancy to turn the whole flesh mix orange.

I started using Mars Brown instead. Very similar in color but doesn't tint orange as much.

Lou

Yes, Lou, I see your point. Mars brown is indeed a "softer" colour, yet very similar in colour to BS; it is also more "opaque" than BS I think and it covers much better.
I wonder, how come that Derek Hansen used to get such good fleshtones? I believe he used about 60% Burnt Sienna in his base flesh colour mix...

Lou!! I just realized your right about that Brunt Sienna. My wife the other day said, that guy either has a california tan or just at a pumpkin! I'll have to try Mars Brown!

Geoff, I din't see you post before. You're absolutely right. I love the Mars colors, and I hear W&N is discontinuing them. I used to use Liquitex oils for some metals - gone.

I guess it's like anything else "well it works well, let's fuss around with it and fix it" and it all goes down hill from there.....
