A quick wash then a coat of my prep paint. The head was even printed in a separate run from the body and it fit perfectly. There is a slight pattern of printing on the garment, but oddly enough it looks like cloth so I'm going to leave it.

That came out very nice and the best printed I have seen so far from Shapeways.

Very nice! what scale is the bust printed at? Also I have heard as far as printing the large smooth areas, if you add some very slight noise in Zbrush before you produce, the printer will be forced to try to calculate that and it helps to smooth things out a bit. I personally haven't tried it yet (waiting for round 3 of printers to come in so I can start producing again) but we just received a replicator 2x at the office so I am hurrying a project along so I can try this technique.

BTW it is good to see you keeping this thread alive!

Thanks Ethan, it is 1:6th and the noise trick is just what makes this print work.
That is one of the reason that this sculpt had to be printed in two separate runs. Both runs max out on the polygon count.
One other thing is the more detail you have on the flat plane the better the print too. The belt is flawless. Even the flat areas show no layering.
Hope to see some results from your printer real soon. I'm looking at the owl nano and the peachy printer. The owln is about 5 k but reports layer thickness of .1 micron that is around .0001 mm.
The peachy is only 100 bucks and uses no build platform. The object layers are emersed in water that is pumped into a tank for each layer. I am definately buying that one. It's a kit and the tank size is any size you want it to be making for a huge build platform (theoretically). Can't go wrong with 100 bucks. I can experiment with it that way.

Nice! Ya I saw your post on the Jewelry printer and once they get down a bit in price it would be fantastic to get one of those! It would be perfect for scales PF hobbyists like. I still personally dig 1:8 to 1:6 so I'm happy as a clam to try to push detail with a larger scale. That Peachy sounds very interesting! We are getting a Robox for the house when it finally ships that says with auto calibration and auto bed leveling it can reach 25 consistent microns so we shall see! The replicator 2x we have at the office is a real pain to level and we have only been able to get consistent quality at 100 microns so I am not expecting much but it does have dual extruders so I plan to experiment with dissolvable support systems which I think is the real key to getting a clean product. You will have to post some pics of the Peachy when you get it going!

3 things I like about the peachy,,,, no extruders, water supports it and water makes it self leveling. If I remember the specs right it should also be easy to convert to wireless. Since it uses sound frequencies to transmit model detail to the printer a set of wireless speakers can probably set up easily enough with a few minor modifications. I cannot wait till they offer it commercially. I haven't heard of the Robox, I'm gona have to look it up.
BTW, I prefer the larger scales for likeness' because you can get a lot of detail. I have 4 prints I'm working on right now that are 1:6 scale. 3 of the are busts and is just a head for an articulated body. I'm gona have to print some hands and shoes for the body because I don't care for the ones that are included. That being said, I run live steam trains and scale down my figures to fit the two scales I model in 7/8ths and 1:20.32. All my customers are currently train or live steam boat modelers.

Interesting. I thought about the possibility of using 3d printing for the model ship builders, to get hyper accurate parts like pumps and such as well as figure work for their super freakin awesome wooden warships! It could happen!
