Hello there...
I'm not use to work with the MS and i've had some of it since June or July, and now it seems that it has become too old, it just wont harden correctly.
Can MS get too old, I couldn't find a "use before" date on the jars...

Thankful for any help,
Kristoffer in Sweden

Kristoffer, Try placing a desk lamp over the open containers. I have found a little head will soften the putty. If this does not work you might just want to get some new putty rather than start or work on a project with material that is no longer good.~Gary

Hi Kristoffer!

Try to put the mixed clay under a 100W lamp when curing for about 15 minutes. Usually its little bit cold in our houses this time of year and if the Magic Sculpt is a little old it doesnt get hard but a bit fraigle.

Cheers

Snarare grynig.

Ha det.

Kris,

I purchased 5 pounds of MagicSculpt in 2002 and still have about 2/3 of it left. The hardener sometimes forms a yellowish skin in the container, but I knead this in before use. So far, I've had no problems with the putty hardening properly. I knead each part seperately until soft before mixing, and then I mix the two parts and knead thoroughly before sculpting.

Let's ask Roy!

MagicSculp is supposed to always have had an almost indefinite shelf life (and now, "Shelf life- NEW IMPROVED FORMULA, Non Crystallizing Resin. Stays Soft and ready to use. Should last a life time.")

If you're careful with the proportions of hardener to resin and mix well it should set just fine - although at low temperatures it takes a lot longer than you think. Like the other night, I thought I'd made a mistake when I checked a neck on a head sculpt with my fingernail and it was still soft enough to leave a mark, despite it being four hours+ since I'd mixed the putty

Note to self: check rock/body section made with excess putty for hardness in future you dolt, not the sculpt!

Thanks Einion...The new improved MS sounds interesting, although I still use the original grey formula.
I've come across only a few cases where MS refuses to harden and I must say that the most common is where it has been mixed to extreme ratios, or incomplete mixing.
Cold weather also effects it's hardening time but as you know putting it under a lamp will pretty much cure it in a few minutes.

Sometimes in the larger containers of MS (50lb tubs) I have found some chunks of what seems to be improperly mixed resin & filler, which forms hard chunks and needs an awful lot of work to be useable and really needs to be re-mixed with the rest of the content of the tub to retain the original mixture ratios.

Basically though, what Mike mentions above about the hardener is a very sound idea. If you find the dark grey part has formed a skin in the container..(a sure sign that you should be doing more sculpting than you are..!!..lol)..re-mix it all so it's colour is uniform and maybe warm it till it's soft if you need to....

The resin (the light grey stuff)..this goes hard in the tub and reacts to cold a lot quicker, but you just need to heat it a little, a 60 watt lamp or a few seconds in the microwave will do for a small tub (you need a space-heater for the large tubs..!!)
Ms should last for years though...I still have some from 5 or 6 years ago that is perfect, so think carefully before you throw it away...it could be your next cool sculpt or conversion.. :)

All the best...Roy.
