So here's my first vBench thread. This is a figure to represent a French ADC around 1809, based on references from Rousselot and the H&C books.

I'm hinting that he was a member of a chasseur regt. prior to his latest assignment, and have given him chasseur headgear and will be putting some leopard skin on the pommel area of the saddlecloth. So far I'm wondering if his headgear is not quite bulky enough, and I haven't added it's bag yet in any case. The rolled out putty did not turn out quite as well as I'd hoped on the saddlecloth, but with a bit of work will look better and be salvageable. The opposite side I expect to be a bit easier with the experience I gained from this attempt.

The legs of the rider are modified airfix, the head scale link (I think), horse is a michael roberts, rest will be scratchbuilt or historex spares. putties are MS, Apoxie, Greenstuff, and A&B, buttons are fine plastic rod cut across and will be hit with a tiny bit of brush on plastic cement to round the edges off a bit...a bit eclectic as I've been fooling around seeing what I like best for different applications.

Cheers,
Greg

I think you are off to a good start on this one. The busby looks all right... once the bag is hung and the rest of the furniture like cording, flounders, cockade and plume you'll see it looks fine.

This is going to look awesome... I'm gonna have to get some live pointers on this sculpting gig.

Talk to ya later

Looks just right Greg. I think everything is working just fine so far. Can't wait to see you get to the detail stage....I always burn rubber to get there so I can see what I've got :)

Great start,i will follow your progress :)
What material you use for sculpting?

Green bits are a mix of Duro and A+B putty. Tan straight A+B. Apoxie sculpt on the headgear. Saddlecloth from MS and I think I'll be sticking with it for the rest of the figure. Thanks for looking.

Thanks Colin(s) ;) I'll be getting along quickly with this. I've got a few days off post knee-surgery. Only hindrance is the drowsiness from my meds haha!

Looking good dude!! Guys, trust me, i've seen this in person, and it's waaayy worse than the pictures let on ;)

The saddle bits (forgive my crass terminology) are looking great! The MS worked out well?

I've got to pick your brain this weekend about some things...

I get a few days off in December with 4 wisdom teeth coming out. I am hoping to be as productive as you but I am thinking I will more likely be sitting in chair whining.

Here's some progress...All done with MS.

Saddlecloth is essentially done save for some minute fold work where it is pinched under the straps (still to be sculpted in duro), and there still needs to be that little tongue of the wooden saddle poking out the the back hump (I'm not sure of the actual terms for these items...).

Work has been done on the rider, with his left arm close to where I want it, and the bag on his Colback added, save for the seams (to be added in duro).

The MS is working out fine Alex, I'm starting to get the hang of smoothing it out and pushing it around I think haha.

Best of luck to you Colin, I'm sure you'll get a bit stir-crazy after the first day or 2 and need to get some work done ;).

Done a bit more here. Added the leopard skin seat to the saddlecloth and finished the saddle, the grooves in the cloth are for the straps. Also added the seams to the colback bag with fine rolled out duro, a couple spots need a slight touch up, but i'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Thanks for looking, comments and critique welcomed.

Looking good brother! I like the way the saddlecloth is hanging, looks like the guys in motion! I want to take a closer look tonight! See ya later pal!

Nice start. I think the work you have made so far is really good. Not finished, but it shows movement.
Saddle cloth, and colback bag give that impression.

Thanks Eduardo, I wanted to instill that idea of movement into it with limited equipment items where I could. The bag and cloth are really the only things where it's possible, as well as the scabbard which will be added late. This is my first mounted conversion, so I'm learning on the go (although I am simultaneously working on another which is about as far along ... shhhh!). It may look a bit rough at spots but it may be due to the fact that I'd gone back with slightly different mixes of putty for corrections, which is where you get the discolourations. In anycase, I tend to work a little rough at first and then go back to enhance, correct.

Thanks for looking

This is looking realy good , Those old Airfix and Historex parts can come in very useful and at the end you will have a unique one off piece .
Keep up the good work.

Thanks Chippy,

Yeah I really love having the ability to kitbash and use bits here or there to speed up the process. It's also comforting for a modeller to always have a loaded box of bits nearby . Although I have sculpted full scratch figures before, I also want to finish stuff once in a while, and at the moment I'm feeling pretty inspired and have a few projects waiting in the wings. I'm hoping that using modified stock bits in a different setting will make make them less noticeable, and I still end up with a unique piece.

Cheers,
G
