The first khaki frock was the same cut as the red frock, but obviously without any piping. So you could still paint him khaki.
I agree about the red "doublet" but in the 1882 Egypt campaign I believe all highland regiments, including the Gordons, wore the Scottish pattern undress "frock", which usually only had the collar in the facing colour and no white piping down the front.
Interestingly (or not!) they wore the frock because the grey uniforms didn't arrive in time. When they did arrive they were stored in Cairo and then issued for the 1884 Sudan campaign
