This came up in Roc's SBS, but I thought it might be an interesting subject.

Who/what are your favorite "oldies". Figures that may no longer be available - like Chota Sahib, Almond, etc?

I got Richard Almond's 90mm mounted Captain Manhes off ebay a couple of years ago and it is superb! But still in progress unfortunately. The anatomy of the rider is so good that you can feel his weight just slouching in the saddle. The hussar details and horse furniture are prefectly rendered too. He was so far ahead of his time.

The more recent 54mm Pegaso Manhes is woefully inadequate in contrast -just count the jacket braids - there are about 1/2 as many as there should be.

Some of the large scale figures that Seagull models London produced in the 70's were also amazing for their time - especially the classic Gonville Bromhead at Rorke's Drift holding his sword and wiping his brow.

And then there is Ray Lamb's Taisho done for Hinchliffe!

Colin

Interesting subject indeed!. I recently bought a couple of Ex-Chota Sahib figures, now casted and marketed by Sarum Soldiers. Unfortunately, their castings are not up to the standards. So, as Poste Militaire's casting was the best i've ever seen, I'm rushing to get my hands on all PM figures i can. I don't trust anybody who gets the moulds will produce anything half as good as the original ones.

This figure just sold yesterday on ebay for $102.50 and in my opinion, worth it too.

I look for the Almond kits that occasionally appear on ebay or someones gray army list. Poste Militaire is another that if I found certain figures, I would paint them again to replace the many I have sold.

The 80mm figures Roger Saunders did for Monarch are superb (even by today's standards). His one-armed Colonel Ewart figure is still one of my favorite sculptures.

Also, Davis Grieve's Zulu and Gonville Bromhead figure for RealModels - classics.

Bill

I have the Taisho Samurai and I also have the Caldercraft/Hinchliffe mounted version. For the time they were truly excellent. I started building the mounted one about 4 years ago and add to it every six months or so.

Chota Sahib are among my favorites-some of the Sarums are pretty good, some not so good.
Almond
Poste Militaire goes without saying

Some of the "Rosedales" were pretty good too.

Sometimes half the fun is tracking them down.

I Like and got many figures from chota some them very interesting

Mike French's LT.Colonel Douglas 11 Hussars is in my table
ready be painted. It is ancient figure but I like so much.
All figures from Derek Hansen 70 mm Poste Militaire the best for me.
The figure from Mike Good, Atila, etc good too.
Sanders, Cannone.....

Many, Many figures and very good sculptors.

Pepe.

Hey Lou, this is an excellent topic, very interesting indeed. ;)

My favorites are :
1 - Poste Militaire,especially the Red Lancer.
2 - Almond.
3 - Series 77
3 - Le Hussar du Marait.

Ciao

Roc. :)

Some of the classics from my collection: Almond Winged Hussar, about a third of the way done, have to finish it one of these days. RealModels John Coddrington, still working up the courage to tackle this one. Series 77 Walter Plank, my first large scale figure, and still one of my favorites. It's amazing how spoiled for choice we are these days.

My favorite old kit is Almond's Polish Lancer. What beautiful sculpting. I have a partial coat of oils on mine that didn't work out. Hopefully I can clean it up.

I wish I would have grabed Cameo's 90mm British Colonial series when I had the chance; Naval Brigade Seaman, 21st Lancer Trumpeter, and Camel Regiment trooper. Some of Cameo's 54mm personalities were very nice too, especially Von Richtofen and Rommel.

I have to agree. I second Series 77.

My "oldie favorite" is Mike French's LtCol. Benjamin Vandervoort - aka John Wayne in "the Longest Day." It may not compare to today's standards, but what a blast to paint it.

Pete

You are right I forgot about Mike Friench and his "Zulu" figures, I had a couple but wanted more! Almond figures "Osage Warrior" slipped the net as well. BUT my loft is filled with old aircraft and armour kits that may be rare some day!!!!

Stephen,
I saw a while back in Brookhurst Hobbies in Orange county the 120mm figure of Michael Caine in "Zulu." It's still out there .... somewhere ....

David Grieve's Waterloo series (6 120mm figures of British soldiers at the battle of Waterloo) and poste militaire's 5 70mm Derek Hansen figures of the franco-prussian war.

The former are now available from Debra Raymond, the latter from Elite.

David Grieve! How could I forget him Johann. I'm working on three of his figures right now. The Waterloo stuff is great but the Victorian series is classic and a joy to paint.

Me too on Hansen's someday I'll get around to painting the last one (I have the Jageer sp? but it's missing a part.

Glad you like David Grieve's figures too, Lou. By the way our new member Bill Horan painted the Cameron Highlander of the Waterloo series to a very high standard for his first book... perhaps if Bill reads this, he'll be tempted to post a picture ? (HINT ! HINT ! :) )
