Are you mixing the Sargent paints with other paints like Vallejo or others, before applying?
Or is strait metal paint over acrylic undercoat?
Zeno

Straight on undiluted and unmixed. They are quick thick and cheap with very durable coverage. I would not apply them as an undercoat for further metals for large ares like helmets or cuirasses as brush strokes would show.

Agreed.
I find the grind of the metallic element is much finer than Vallejo or Citadel metals, therefore much better for second and third layers on large areas as opposed to base coats. For small details like buttons and badges they are great as they don't bury surface detail like some of the coarser metallics.

Work started on his tunic. Base coat is as described above. I added shadows 1, 2 & 3 by adding in increasing amounts of V English Uniform into the diluted base colour. Incandescent light has shifted the colour a bit toward yellow, although there are definitely yellows in my khaki shade due to the inclusion of Med Flesh.

Also added some lining and washes on the insignia and buttons with Liquitex raw umber ink.

Tunic done except for metals, Sam Browne belt and divisional flashes. Back to his face in a few minutes. I put a bag over his head and dull coated the tunic to get a constant sheen (Vallejos were matt and inks shiny satin so it clashed a bit).

And two insignia mysteries solved - the Major's epaulette crown and the design of a PPCLI button. Also shown is the ribbon to the Military Cross.

Getting down to the short strokes brother.
All the element, face, tunic, details are all coming together nicely. Looks like at any second he could turn his head and stick out his tongue.
Beautiful work from putty to paint.

PS- Can you have a peek at the general figure discussion forum? The thread is "Canadian Battledress colours", I think you might ba able to answer my question. I don't want to sidetrack this thread.
Thanx

Very nicely painted, particularly the face. Meticulously done and a very lifelike tribute to the man.

Yes, looks awesome! Can't wait to see the finished bust in Ajax! I'm sure you will bring this beauty along with the other super busts that you worked already.
Cheers,

Thanks again all for the great feedback. Here are a couple of shots showing the method I am using to get the texture onto his buttons. I roughly "brush sculpted" the crown and a "VP" onto each button with thick Liquitex acrylic paint. Once I have achieved the desired relief, I will redo the buttons in metals and inks. These shots also show the final PPCLI shoulder title. The pure metal paint was not showing up definitively enough so I went over the letters in Liquitex Pro bottled Naples Yellow (a very thick paint that I also used for the button relief) and then added gold powder mixed with Sargents gold. I am hoping to finish him today although I don't yet have a suitable base for him....so he will be done to the dowel.

I have decided on my next project - Lt. Alexander Roberts Dunn 11th Hussars 1854 at Balaklava (Charge of the Light Brigade) - Canada's first VC. I am surprised I have never seen him rendered in miniature.
