Hi all

Not trying to hijack the thread, just thought I'd add my own (feeble) attempt at sculpting a beret. It's supposed to be a WWII Polish Para of Market Garden era. Please be gentle it's my first ever attempt at sculpting. Obviously a WIP.

Thanks for the picture ...what scale is this ? Possibly 1/10 th

...it's not easy doing a beret they were a lot larger than today .....if I may Add a band along the lower edge and possibly reduce the badge size ,,,I get the general shaping on mine then pick away any not needed but don't try and sculpt all detail finding painting can be easier to bring that out

Hi Nap

Yes 1/10th I'm trying to re-work this one into a WWII Polish Para.

Great bust do you need reference on the beret ?

Nap

Yeah it's a good bust a bit confusing as the beret is a smaller crown type, he's wearing a wolly pully and shirt, but carrying a PIAT which IIRC went out of service just before the war in Korea. This is one of my reasons for using it as a conversion. Thanks for the offer of ref for the beret, but I have some.

Looking good so far Nap

Cheers Malc

Hopefully later it will look even better ...reworked the edges of tge coveralls where I caught it ! ...also skimmed over the beret with magisculpt ......got to do a review later then it's on with this

Great thread Nap, a lot of information. I usually prefer miniaturess from deeper history, but your threads are so packed with background information and interesting photos that it's all very tempting and I can't resist :) Thanks for sharing, I'm looking forward to the next step in your work.

Cheers Borek

Great work so far ... Maybe I would add a little hint of wrinkles on the beret, as in some pictures. It gets more realistic. But that is after all for you. Good luck and fun, I will follow with interest further developments.

Cheers Borek :)

Quality work there Nap. Makes mine look like it were done by a finger painting gorilla.

Looking good Nap, just caught up.
I don't know about the ties at the back of the beret but Brits always cut them off, I am not sure when that started, it may be post war.

Beret update

It appears sometimes the ties could have been cut off and sewn in

Here's a maroon SAS version

image.jpeg

Here's an original beige SAS ...with the ties

The actual badge is a 44 period example most likely applied to it when Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair "Paddy" Mayne DSO & Three Bars decided that he would allow the original guys that where still around to wear there original sand / beige berets during 1944 as when they arrived in the UK they had to go over to the aribrone forces maroon examples , note the way the badge is worn at a very sharp angle which again is a sign of one of the original members of the SAS.

Love research ...could be changing the angle of badge a little !

If I were to be Mr Picky, I would say you need a little more material at the back of the beret - ref the photo. Your version looks a bit "modern", IMO. The WW2 berets were much bigger in the crown... Re tapes at the back, they were either cut, sewn in or tucked out of the way. Either way, they were not to be visible when worn... according to my grandad!(y)

Cheers Steve

Thanks for the picture and the thoughts ...will be getting the putty out for the back !

Appreciate your thoughts ref ties ...soldiers being soldiers I reckon ties might well be cut off despite the original pics , ties could be viewable for the pics only
