Yesterday I installed new Sculptris alpha 6. What amazes me is analogy between "Sculptris sculpting process" and the "hand sculpting". It is so natural and easy.
This is my first serious try, and this will be a "template" for several bust I'll try to do in Sculptris:

Yes, I know, it's not "real" sculpting, but hey, I'll give it a try ;)

There is a place online that you can upload the file and they will 3D print it for you. I think it was shapeway.com. I bought a couple of little figures off of there to see how they looked and they were pretty good.

Nice work BTW.

Thx for info, good to know ;)
I'll try to find some 3D printer first here locally(Croatia) - but if that fails...

Here is some more progress:

That looks amazing Darko! I am still getting the hang of the program, I haven't done 3D modeling since the days of connecting triangles.

Thx Hiroshi ! Try sculptris, it is not about connecting triangles any more - it's more like moving the clay around without dirty hands ;)

Edit: Sorry, I just figured out that you already have it ;)

My wife said that it looks unatural, so I decided to test with simetry disabled,
moved a left side of the lips, and the left eyebrow, then added a few skin wrinkles, amazingly this really helps - I think it is not so unatural any more:

it is shapeways.com sorry about that. If you click on hobby in the drop down menu then pick a "tag" that you want to browse through you will see lots of pages of figures. I clicked on sci fi and then chose two figures to buy. I have them at home already and will take a pic of them tonight if you like.

He's looking really cool Darko.(y)

An average bust 3d printed would cost you up to or over $100 on shapeways

to give you an idea, we have a model 6inches long, 1 inch wide, 1 inch tall thats hollow and it still costs about $40-50 with decent material

3d printing just isnt a great option for anything other than a master at this point.

I agree, that would be good enough only for doing a master for regular mold.
100 USD for the master would be acceptable if quality is good.
I take in consideration that I do not need any sculpting material/tools, that I choose scale to print, and that earlier pieces are "reusable" in any scale, etc...just thinking at loud.

From the pics on the site I see some roughness on the surface, but that are mostly 28 mm figurines...

They do have a grain to them that needs to be polished off. I'll get som big pictures up tonight of the two I have from them.

I loged from my facebook account, I do not care if they know who I am ;)
But this is not the end. There is soooo much tech stuf to prepare your 3D print :cautious:
40 page manual to make useful obj file. But I did not give up yet...

Cool darko, looking fabulous!

I've used shapeways myself, but only for non organigic stuff so far.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Jon.

Hi Darko,

Looks good! I'm not convinced this isn't real sculpting, it's more difficult for me if anything:D I'm looking forward to seeing yours printed too. I've printed one of my sculptris sculpts at shapeways in WSF, polished WSF and White Detail. Out of these three I prefer polished WSF. I haven't tried FUD yet, because it's too expensive for me with this bust since I didn't get it hollowed that well. I'm going to try FUD on the figure I'm working on now when I finish her, but at the rate I'm working on hobbies at the moment that may be 2013! I've test uploaded and if I remember right it only came to around $35 in 90mm solid FUD.

It honestly was pretty easy to upload to Shapeways. I've detail some of that on my earlier threads if you're interested.

Here are the threads with photos:

Thx Redhorse, this is useful.
Polished WSF looks good, but I think some "hand work" will be needed to prepare a master.
Barke02, those helmets are also lookung good ;)

Probably for the first time I'll do a simple "bust template" in 1/9, yust head and shoulders, no clothes, hair or anything else - good enough for test...

I had no problems with upload, but had one "non-manfold" issue and could not find it. Tutorials shows how to fix non-manfold, how to size the mesh, and how to make it hollow using blender. The last one I did not suceed yet ;)

Now about that "reusing" I mentioned in prev. posts, so this is basically the same male head but modified into something completely different.
Does it saves time ? Yes but not more than you need to get the basic skull volumes, other than that, not a single place of the sculpt stayed unchanged:
