Hi guys,

I've had this wee chap on my workbench for a while now, but baulked at doing the tartan is such a small scale.:eek:

I've spent the past 2 days working on it (and pulling my hair out in the process) and have posted some progress pics to show you why I hate painting tartan.;) This is a classic Andrea 54mm kit given to me by my good mate Alan Mackie several years ago. Thanks Big Fella:D

The tartan is the Mackenzie tartan. The tunic is only base coated at this time.

I hope you like my progress so far.:)

Great stuff, Tony. Mackenzie tartan, huh? Masochistic are we?:) I have this figure in the grey army but haven't taken the plunge yet. If there is one thing I would suggest is maybe toning the yellow down a touch. Bill Horan gave a tip in his book. He finishes darker setts such as the Blach Watch, etc with a wash of Blue Black oil paint. This helps tone down all the colours as well as pulling them together.

Hi Paul. Yes, I am a masochist and I agree the yellow is a bit strong at this stage. Great tip about the oil wash- I'll give it a try. I have used Shepard Paine's book "Building and Painting Scale Figures" to help me with the tartan.

Hi Ray, thank you for your comments. I'm washing black/ blue oils over the tartan now to try and dull down the yellow stripes and add some contrast. I'll post new pics in a day or two.

Thanks Karsten, I appreciate your comments.

Good work Tony on a not so easy job.
Never done a Tartan, and i must admit that i would stay far away from it.
I have trouble enough with a Roman shield.
Good luck with it, and i'm sure you gonna create something beuatifull.

Marc

Hi Tony!

I like this skintone, it will be a great figure. Nowdays I also deal with the British and Commonwealth units, it's a very new subject for me and the uniforms are very interesting. I know for most of the people here on the forum it is evidence but I live on the other part of the world ;)

Keep us posting! Happy painting! :)

Cheers,
Balázs

Mackenzie tartan

Hi, this is looking great but there is no yellow stripe in the Mackenzie, my grandfather was in the Seaforths and I have researched this tartan for an oil painting I'm doing. It's red and white stripes, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Scotty.

Hi Tony,Your mojo's not just kicked in but it's in overdrive.
Nice work on this one, love the tartan work and the flesh too.
Looking forward to the finished piece.

Hi Marc. Thanks for your kind words mate.:) At least with Roman shields you now have Tommi's stencils to help you. Where are the tartan stencils??

Cheers Derek, I still have a few touch ups to do on the tartan but I'm pleased you like it and I appreciate your comments.:)

Hi Balazs, thanks for your encouragement mate, and if I can help you with any information on Commonwealth uniforms etc, please let me know.;) I'm only too happy to help.:D

Merci Claude, thanks for taking the time to comment.:)

G'day Scotty, you are absolutely right mate.:eek::eek: The Mackenzie tartan does have white stripes not yellow. :( Since I have no intention of repainting the entire tartan , I'll try to highlight the yellow stripes with off-white and leave the darker sections yellow. I doubt too many people will notice in this scale;)

Hi John, I think you may have spoken too soon. Thanks for your kind words, I hope to fix the tartan tonight. :)

G'day Mark, yeah the mojo is definitely rising (Mr Mojo Risin'). I appreciate your comments mate and I've attached a few more pics to show you where I stopped painting last night. Great fun being able to paint figures and watch the Ashes on TV at the same time.

I've added several washes of blue/ black oils over the tartan to tone down the yellow stripes andto tie all the colours together. Great tip Paul, thanks:D

Lovely work Tony! I think you're right in that few people will notice the wrong colour stripe in this scale. I really like the toned down effect you achieved through the washes. I use a thin glaze of Sepia, as opposed to a wash, to do the same thing. This allows me to apply it thicker along the bottom for a shadow/weathered effect as well as muting the colours too. What ever works right? Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing him finished.

P.S. Did I read on another post that you were thinking of attending Euromilitaire this year? I could be wrong but thought I would check with you.

G'day Glenn, thanks for your comments mate. Yes, I've booked my airfare and will be at EuroMilitaire this year. I'm still trying to find somewhere to stay while I'm there, but I don't care if I have to sleep in a dumpster. Just being there will be one of the highlights of my life.

Seaforth Highlander.

This is avery good start mate, in my humble opinion, I like the skin tones already and the Tartan,I have never done tartan myself but would like to try. This project will be a very nice piece indeed when completed, keep up the good work as always.

Thanks for posting, RobH. :)

Tony, don't kid yourself mate your average Folkstone dumpsters got nothin' on the Perth dumpters that your used to!!:D:D

Bloody hell mate, your getting faster and faster. I think your soon ganna' finish one in a day (hopefully not in a dumpster in folkstone =D ). This minia though is coming along nicely and the only critacism i have so far is that the legs don't look quite done (and probably because they're not).

Cheers,
Daniel
