After you bake your piece try using fine/ extra fine steel wool. It does a great job of smothing the surface. Just be careful when going over fine detail. ~Gary

Hello Valerio,

To smooth the polyclay before baking, I use vaseline, rubbing alcohol, lighter fluid or turpentine depending on the degree of 'smoothness' I'm looking to achieve.

I'm afraid water is no use.

dears friends, dear mr quang,

i'm happy for all your advices, so as soon as i'll try with that medium . a question more:
when the figure is finished or sculpting section is termined, and after using turpentine or vaseline, i put the figure in the hoven, than before starting on priming, how i can clean the oily surface?
thanks again

p.s. for mr quang, it was wery interesting o spent some time speaking with you at girona, about sculpting and pointing out all the defects of my fist bust. a hope to use yours advices for the next bust. we'll see.

Hello Valerio,

It was a pleasure discussing with you in Gerona.

As for your question, you don't have to worry. The oil or thinner film will just disappear/evaporate during the cooking.
