Having painted plenty of busts over the last couple of years i thought i'd try my hand at the Andrea Miniatures 90mm / 1-18th scale mounted figure of Lawrence of Arabia,i've always been facinated with the history surrounding T.E Lawrence and the Arab revolt, the interest started for me after having seen the film starring Peter O'toole,i was only 3yrs old at the time of the cinema release and so i've never been able to appriciate it on the big screen, however i have the special edition DVD which i've watched countless times and never tire of it,numerous figures in small scale have been released in the past depicting lawrence but none of them really appealed to me until i saw the andrea release in 90mm,i just new i wanted to paint this for my collection and set about saving the funds, its not a cheap kit,it retails for about £170 and consists of over 50x pieces so its not a kit i'd recomend for someone starting out in the hobby, all the parts are cast in white metal except the camels head and scenic base which are cast in resin.
Care has to be taken during assembly as some of the parts are very delicate and if not careful the white metal could snap as i found to my cost on one of the saddle straps.
The camels legs are reinforced with steel pins during the casting so there is no fear of any leg breakages, however i did find one of the camels legs did not seat properly when postined on the scenic base so some careful manipulation was needed to correct the problem, unfortunately although i like some of the subjects Andrea release their casting is a little to be desired, this was one of many problems i had assembling the piece.
The piece had to be painted in sub assemblies as it would be impossible for me to paint the whole thing assembled as one unit, this was divided up into the figure / camel saddle / camel.
Painting was completed using oil paints over acrylic undercoats, weathering was important in displaying the completed piece within a desert scene.
I wanted to incorporate a small scene depicting a damaged / ruined railway building with lawrencew overseeing the scene, damaged or ruined railway buildings were very common place and Lawrence himself took part in a series of attacks on the Hejaz railway in early 1918,i used some parts from my spares box to replicate some small arms ammo crates and turkish flag left behing by the retreating turks, the ruined building parts were made from plaster of paris which i poured into a suitable mould and once set the brickwork was created using an old dart.
Weathering was done with oils and pastel chalks to create a dust effect.
T.E Lawrence died on 13.05.1935 as a result of a motorcycle accident near bovington in Dorset,he is buried at Moreton.
