Hi Guys ,

I have heard a lot of folk mention this product my questions are :

What is it like ?

Does it work properly ie matt down totally?

Any advice on using it on Acrylics and Oils?

Is it better to brush or Airbrush?

Is it only available in the small pots ..what about a spray version?

Anything you should not use it on ?

Is there a similar alternative (apart from the known types of matt varnish(Vallejo etc)

Any other comments would be welcome for sure

Cheers guys

Can't be sprayed or use with oils Kev.
Put a touch in your water, just to cloud it.
Too much and you'll get a chalky residue that's a swine to cover.
I make a solution up in an eye dropper bottle and use it that way.
Bit of trial and rror, too much and Mr Chalky comes, too little and you'll still get a sheen.
Brilliant stuff on the notorious shiners, yellow, blue, red and green.;)

It is an additive not a surface matting agent. I sometimes add a little to an acrylic paint which i suspect may dry with a bit of a shine. It is only for use with acrylic paints. If you use too much it will cause the paint to dry with a chalky residue. It is good stuff used in moderation.

Hi Nap
I've used this product for a long time.It is not a varnish it is an agent.I mainly use it with Tamiya colours though it does work with Vallejo(not tried it with any other brands) It will even turn gloss paint matt. You only need to use a small amount.Do not use it as a varnish, if you do, what you use it on will turn white and chalky. If mixed with Tamiya or Vallejo paint you will definitely get a better finish by spraying(properly thinned of course). You can use water but I get a much better finish Tamiya's own thinner
hope this helps

For my part, if I need to 'Matt', a figure down. I use 'Testors Dullcote' Spray... Be careful of the 'Brush on' type, as this may strip your paint. I have used it between layers of paint with no Ill effects. .. Well, apart from my crap painting. LOL However, I have never tried the bottled version via an AB.

Mark

I haven't used the Tamiya version Nap but I've been using Vallejo Matt Medium with good results and also Vallejo Matt Varnish for those senior moments when I forget to add the medium before painting. Alternatively, Jo Sonja paints dry flatter than anything I've ever seen, sometimes you have to gloss them up a bit but adding matt medium...no really.

Cheers,
Billy :)

Hi mate I have used the same as billy and that seems to work for me , I have heard a lot of people talk about Sonja paints , are the good and where can you get them from .
Cheers Chris

Yes, they are very nice to work with and cover well. The only drawback I've found is, as mentioned, sometimes they dry a little too matt. This is fine for surfaces like fabric etc. but not so good for things like skin and leather. I've only found 2 places to get them in UK:

www.josonjas-uk.co.uk/‎ (full range)
www.pegasusart.co.uk/Jo-Sonja (limited range, mainly sets)

Hope this helps,
Billy :)

I would use it in about 1 to 7-8 to paint mix but I usually put it in the water first just enough to cloud suffices
