Hi mate, I’m doing an Iceni figure but will probably leave him out as like the current scene.

The shield is just cut Styrene sheet, shaped based on images of the same, the boss is styrene sheet heated over a tea light then stretched over a replica bullet I have, they are great for different dome shapes.

The reverse is freehand would grain done with craft knife then lightly sanded.

Hi Marcus

Be interesting to see the Iceni even if you decide not to use him , I would be inclined to move the figures back a bit but I might be confused as they have legs ....lol

Thanks for sharing details on shirked and how you form domes

Look forward to more on this

Happy benchtime

Thanks nap, will be moving the figures more centrally in the scene. I’m coming to the conclusion in abandoning the Iceni warrior, he won’t add much value in the scene, I might use his severed head though lol.

Been making some Celtic arrows for the scene, quite effective in battle and from what I’ve read were about 28-30inches in length, so scaled them to the 1/16 scene.

Snapped arrows embedded in shields and some buried in the ground having missed their intended targets. With the officer shield showing more arrow hits.

I can imagine that Roman officers were a target on the battlefield, with there plume’s being a tempting target for assassination teams and archers.

Looking at it positively good sculpting practice !!

Not sure what you've got planned for groundwork , my thoughts would be to loose the head and arm and build a small bank up at the from

Whatever you decide this is a great project and now with arrows ...how did you do the flights ?

Thanks for updates

Happy benchtime

Lots of sculpting to do anyway, dependant on how well that goes may do another figure scene of an Iceni as a side project.

I know what you mean about the bits and bobs on the ground, I usually make more than I use and will only make a decision last thing with final composition.

Regarding the arrows, cut to length, tip created and noch added to other end, then the fletch’s are made by cutting some foil (from wine bottle top) into strips, cut to shape, slits cut to indicate feathers. The Fletch is held length ways with tweezers, the leading edge is secured by lightly dipping in superglue, then held in place on the arrow shaft.

Onto putty work starting with the Tesserarius (officer) in the scene. He has a slight swagger and looks like someone you wouldn’t mess with.

In Ancient Roman times it was seen as being unmanly to wear anything resembling trousers, that’s what the barbarians wore. So for him even though ancient Britain was a cold wet place, he will not be seen dead in breeches so he is sporting the traditional army tunic. I’ve given him a sash and posh belt to denote his seniority.

As the scene is set in Britain the Tesserarius only concession is more appropriate footwear than the traditional sandal, an early leather boot. Also made him an arm (Manica) and leg guard, other detailing and like straps to add after this has cured.

Need to work on his upper body tunic and segmented (Lorica Segmentata) armour and neck scarf, that’s next.

Is that ordinary "green stuff" putty that you use? And do you have any special or favorite tools to use in sculpting?

Randy
Hi Randy, it’s Greenstuff (Kneadatite) mixed with Magic Sculpt A-B. The more A-B for structural areas. You have to build in layers so will be adding to these already sculpted areas with more detail and need to add more to the reverse of his lower tunic. The temptation is to add to much detail or fix problem areas all in one go when the putty area is already soft, it’s best to leave to harden before continuing.

Tools wise, just simple sculpting tools and scalpal. For applying the putty and pushing into areas to make it hold many use wooden toothpick or similar, I tend to use a metal point and a couple of silicone tipped shapers.

I did this video a while ago, it shows how I mix and apply the putty.

Hi Marcus

You are Mr Greenstuff , said it before but like the way you use it , thanks for video as well

Good thinking on the clothing , what you've done so far looking good

It's great to see what your achieving with these figures

Thanks for sharing

Look forward to next

Just watched the video Marcus, very interesting. Never have much success with magic sculpt as it seems to crumble never thought of mixing it with green stuff. Do you dip your tools in anything to stop them sticking to the putty?

Thank you mate, lots to do but it’s fun sculpting the details and looking forward to doing each figure.

Thanks Keith, the barrier you need is Vaseline, use it for tips of fingers and tools to stop them sticking. Also, for smoothing use a brush dipped in water, that works for smoothing. The other thing many do including me is using saliva, pop the tool in mouth and apply to the model surface particularly for the shaper tool.

Hi!

Fantastic and incredible conversion and project. I admire your capacity and what you are getting with these figures, that are showing their potential.
Congrats and go on in this way. I'm waiting with impatient to see all the diorama painted.

Thank you so much for sharing, I'm learning a lot.

Cheers,

Francisco

Thank you Francisco, after the putty has fully cured, will do a little filing, where there is some gap or imperfection my trick is to use a little sprue Goo, thinned with Tamiya thin; it acts like a leveller.

Marcus

That's looking the tops mate .....the greave and footwear in particular ....I looked close up and inspiring modelling indeed

Nice putty pushing and great replies to the questions regarding using the putties

Thank you mate, there a couple of rough areas but couldn’t fix those until the putty has fully cured, some stick their figures in the oven to speed up the process, I obviously can’t do that as will result in melty mess. I like to work quickly but hope not to roughly as I love to see the figure come to life. :)
