Hi Marcus,
must say, this is one of the best projects on the Forum at the moment and certainly has me captivated, your skill with putty and dedication to detail are 100 procent and very inspiring. Absolutely love what you have accomplished up to now, and am waiting for more…..bravo

Made a start on the painting, doing metal work first. Primed in Tamiya XF1 then Alclad 2 primer, and Burnt iron for main areas. Then Tamiya XF1 / flat Titanium mix for highlights with Mr Hobby Metal brass mixed with Tamiya XF1 matt black for Brass fixtures.

I’m experimenting a little with the metals at the moment, appreciate that the wings on the Imperial Gallic were apparently stamped into the helmet, but I rather like them being brass. I’ve seen helmets with stamped and attached detail and as very few exist from history I’m thinking of sticking with artistic license on this helmet for the Tesserarius.

Hi Marcus

Great to see the brushes in use , nice start , I would be invol end to put a wash over the brass and add a little wear and tear ie:a tiny bit of rust ......my thinkng ......they are on a long campaign !

Of course as you say you are experimenting atm

Thanks for update

Happy benchtime

I like the rust idea, will add a little. The Ninth Legion marched for three days to get to the fortification at Camulodunum, and British weather is temperamental at the best of times. So Iron Age armour would be prone to wear and rust. Thank you.

Great to see the start of the hairy stick work, and I'm all for a bit of artistic license.
Thank you Peter. Being the tinkerer that I am I’ve now changed the helmet, the eyebrows are now the same Steel colour as the main helmet. The version of the Galea I had based mine on causes a lot of controversy with those that know, I don’t want it to be a distraction from the rest of the build. Part of the advantage, disadvantage of posting as you go it garners opinion from others, I mostly take as advice to reinforce what I was already making, on occasion it can mean changing few things already made or painted. All part of the fun and hobby that can at times be a double edged sword.

Hello Marcus,
I've just joined in on viewing this fine example of thought, dedication and talent. I know you are visualising yourself in each figure and situation. You should thank God for your gift.

Getting into the metal work. I figured that the Iron Age steel would react to the environment quickly, so after a three day march some rust would be visible. It all adds to the scene, blocking in some colour underpainting at the moment. Also made a stencil for the bull image (Mithras) for the shields of the ninth legion.

Your work is impressive! Excellent paintwork! I couldn't imagine that these plastic figures (i have miniart figures and i know that they need a lot of work) will become these outstanding figures!!! Amazing is your talent in transforming these figures to a magnificent diorama. Congratulations!!!

Looking very good. Medieval and Roman shield decorations and patterns are enough to make me go cross eyed!

Mike
Thank Mike, I wanted to do something different than the usual Roman Shields, only one intact Scutum has ever been found and not like those depicted by reenactors. So going with a central bull design for all of them with some additional motifs and customisation for a decorative but consistent design.

Thank you, I really should try proper sculpting from scratch but I love converting and see the potential in conventional kits. As these are relatively cheap the six figures cost wise are about the same as a single resin figure, only time and energy are then needed to turn them into the look I’m after rather than being stuck with someone else’s design. Just hope the painting brings them to life.

Hi Marcus

I've said it before , you've a real talent in converting ...impressive painting now as well

Like the way the armour sections are painted individually and positioned

Your painting face ladt as well ...different approach

Thanks for updates

Look forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime
