Hi Simon good to hear you did some work on the sapper he will look great when done that’s for sure. The weather here is cold with snow well a slight covering. Just been out for a nice pint with the Team seemed like a good idea.

Get a tot of Rum down you, great for colds well great any time .

Steve, good to hear your taking care of priorities. The sapper is a fantastic figure, really looking forward to painting him and of course I'll document it here. I'll give the rum a pass but I'll make up for it with brandy!

Cheers Simon

Time got the better of me yesterday so didn't manage to post updates.

Despite sage advice from Rob and Kev I did some very subtle highlights to the tunic, it just gives a little more definition to the folds and creases. Also started the haversack, which I intend to continue with today as and when I can get to my bench. Got things going on with the in laws meaning I'm going to be busier for a while than I really want to be, hey ho such is life. Anyway enough waffle on with the pics;

So go on tell me I ruined it! Well hopefully not.

Man!, crazy work on this chap, i think the contrast between ligjts and shadows looks spot on, carry on Sir!

Looks ok to me too.
If you didn't like it you could always tone it down.
Its always good to push your boundaries, you learn a lot from doing so.

Malc

Marquis, Malc, thank you gentlemen your comments are warmly recieved, I don't have far to go now on him which is good because I'm itching to get on with my Kurassier, I want to paint something that isn't blue, green or red for a change.

Cheers Simon

Not much done again but I'll put a before and after pic up of the work done primarily on the leather webbing and pouches etc.

Now I think I have either over done the worn leather or I need a bit of colour variation in thr scuffed bits. I'll revisit that next time I get to my bench but would appreciate any comments, after all it is a critique WIP and I have thick skin.

Hi Mr Briggsy

Seems there's a lot of colds about ...I'm averaging a box of tissues a day atm ( does that sound so not right ...lol ) ....but going to get painting if it's the last thing I do !!

As for the Figure , your subtle highs work well , nice one , regarding the leather , I think the weathering is a bit too stark and needs toning down with a leather colour and then dry brush ...just my thoughts mate

Seeing legs all the time confuses me ...lol

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Getting to the end of the cold now thankfully and what you do with tissues mate I really don't want to know.

Glad you approve the highlights, I just felt it needed a slight lift. I agree re the leather work, I was working on the assumption that as a member of the Garde Mobile he would have old poss secondhand kit and wouldn't be a keen on maintenance as a regular soldier. I shall re work it hopefully today.

Possibly and Yes.

Black leather is Brown leather with a surface tint, the wear would go brown, then as the surface breaks down and the core is exposed , yellow/brown. But you must have bulled enough boots to already know this!
Some dilute glazes with a red/brown ink would fix it, also give it the distinctive satin dull shine.

I think once the colour is right the wear will not look excessive. Someone on here posted a Fallschirmjager bust not too long ago that has exquisite worn black leather webbing.

Cheers Rob, yes I went too far with the black, I really should try not using black paint and mix a chromatic black instead. You are right about the boots, maybe it's just cheap leather used but when boots are scuffed and get soaked through British Army DMS boots are a very pale leather. I am altering things, or I was until my Granddaughter arrived, only to be told she doesn't like me, sensible girl. Won't be going for the shine, only well cared for leather does that or old dried out unusable leather. The Garde Mobile were reservists, the French were on the back foot in the war so I can't see too much effort being put into personal admin like that.

Thanks again for the steer on this.

Cheers Simon

This is looking good, and I agree, just bringing together the weathering and the core leather tones would be a good idea. I find using something the the Citadel contrast paints work well for that, or an oil wash.

Cheers Nigel, yeah an oil wash would work better that acrylics, all I have to do is find them. Will see what I can do.

For me this is your best work to date, I'm really impressed.
I do agree with the guys about the leather, which is easily sorted.
Keep up the good work.

Very many thanks Malc that's nice to hear. I will sort the leather tonight if I can locate the oils, nearly finished the rifle I just have to sort the sling, that I have been told is a bit on the awkward side.

Cheers Simon

Right, I fixed the leather on his webbing I think, I did something I haven't done in many a year;

Yeah an oil glaze with Rowneys Brown Pink, a very versatile colour, odd what you find in desk draws.

Anyway with that and the putting together phase he is done. I tried using the supplied sling but found it far too fiddly for my arthritic fingers so out came the post it notes again.

Obviously it's a lovely figure and you've done a cracking job of painting it, but I really love the way you've done that pan on his back, it looks ace!

Thank you I'm chuffed at that, first time I have done NMM in a number of years, sometimes it is better than metallic.
