Owww.......it was a traffic jam, then ....

To come back to this topic: I do like the colours of uniform, equipment, etc. of this paratrooper figure - hopefully we can get some comments here on how to paint that.

... Also, I'm still stuck with that question: why did the screaming eagles have mohawk haircuts and warpaint? There just HAS to be a good story behind this...

To be honest, Pete actually is very well versed on the subject. He also keeps in close contact with many veterans who tell the story "as it happened". That is an area he has studied very heavily. He might know the answer.

Lou,

I know that Pete does have a profound knowledge on, and a passionate interest in this subject. I would love to hear what he has to tell us about this - many of us know about the mohawk haircuts, but nobody knows the story behind it; so it would be great to find out here.

Also I had another look just now at that black and white photo Alex posted.

As you can see it's a black and white pic., AND they're standing next to a C-47 Skytrain (or "Dakota" - now there's another native american name...) with invasion stripes painted on...

So, in all fairness, Pete may be right in saying that they used black and white removable aircraft paint, and the osprey illustrations might be a slight misinterpretation of that b&w pic.... It is difficult to judge from a b&w picture if that warpaint was actually black or red.

Peace,

Johan

Johan,

I'm glad you pointed that out. Ospreys have sometimes been known to be incorrect. I can recall countless times which the information in an Osprey book was contradicted by one or two other sources.

As I'm not a real "historical accuracy" stickler (I prefer to look at a figure in terms onf craftsmanship and creativity), I usually don't go that deep but as a general rule, I do try to use a few references to at least give it a try. Moreso so I don't have to hear about it later.

Lou

Je ne sais pas. :(

J'ai réglé ma télé sur noir et blanc. Je ne reconnais pas John Wayne quand il est en couleurs.

Guys,
I'm on my way out to the movies - finally getting around to seeing that epic "orc, troll, & furry feet movie." I'll post a lengthy opus on the subject re: mohawks, facepaint, etc. I also fully intend to back up my argument with direct quotes, citations, and a bibliography.

Well I hope that's the only thing P. H. posts.

Again on the wrong side of the street

you know, Ospreys have been known to be wrong, so have Pete's. A good thing might be notice that is for a private collection, Mr Stoner migt have said I want that one and pointed at the cover of the book, Alex painting it ( presumably for money would have said ahhh....OK).

Tell ya something about Veterans can only really comment on what they see themselves, not every soldier in that particlar war or action. I bet there was plenty of paras didn't see a single mohawk, yet I bet also there was some that couldn't miss em.

Where did osprey get their research from I do think the pic at the side of the Dak is posed, but I have seen other refs to this Camo over the years.

Maybe this should be a case of nice figure Alex, maybe not 100% accurate but nice all the same. Rather than a I am right and I am gonna prove it so there type of post.

Wow, look at all of the defense attornies.

When one posts or speaks publically, one opens oneself for critique-good, bad or indifferent-if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. If all you expect or want to hear is praise, then hire someone to tell you how great you are.

I won't even justify the brother's post with a response.

Personally I think it's well painted, but this thread should have stayed closed.

Well said Lou. If someone posts a photo of the their work for the world to see, they should be prepared for the comments, good or bad. And it should be them responding, not the peanut gallery. I sure hope nobody stops short around here, or a nose or two will lodge where the sun don't shine.

Well, here we prefer that if you want you work critiqued publicly they poster asks for it in his post.

Since that has been pointed out many times it will be amended to the rules.

We offer a place for people to showcase work in addition for people to have their work critiqued, the poster decides.

Having said that this thread is closing once and for all, sorry Pete if you still have that info on 101st feel free to start a new topic without any reference for this disgrace of a thread. People I'm sure would benefit from your information.
