A friend came up with this photo of a distant family member taken in Nagyszeben (now Romania) back in 1909. It is rather a plain uniform with rather a tall shako for the time. I suspect that the sword and cuff decoration signify either an officer or SNCO. It is of course possible that he could be a Police Officer of other government functionary.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Hi MCPWik,
Do have any clues what colour the collar on the uniform jacket is. This would help determine what branch of the military your family member served in. As to rank if the single star on the collar is metal gold or silver he is a lieutenant , British infantry equivalent 2nd lieutenant, if made of celluloid he is a gefreiter, but suspect the second option unlikely in view of the quality of the uniform.
Good luck with your research.

I've no idea, but it is not dissimilar to the colour of the shako, so is a dark colour such as black or Prussian Blue (?).

Many thanks,
