The figure depicted is of a 1st Sgt of the Marine Bn that fought at the first battle of Bull Run. Of the SNCOs only 12 had seen action before and that was with the war against Mexico in 1848. I have decided to show the man as arriving at Bull Run, having just come from Washington Navy yard. for a good account of the battle see here;

The marines acquitted them selves well.
I love this period of history as I have re-enacted a union CSM in a regular infantry regiment and also a Marine private soldier.
So here it is.
Painted in acrylics and oils

Cheers Nap, I don't think I could run around like I used too, but maybe a photo soon when this is finished. Thanks for the comment

Very nice work off of the line Bob.
I am sure this will be a cracker Mate.

Thank you Keith for the comment, really appreciated.

Thanks for posting and thanks for the link. Great article. I was not aware of the actions of the battalion subsequent to the initial drive off of Henry House Hill. David Sullivan, the author is a noted historian and expert on period USMC uniforms. To me his word is law regarding Marine Corps history. He and Dr. Charles H. Cureton coauthored an excellent book on the subject titled The Civil War Uniforms, The United States Marine Corps: The Regulations of 1859. I am honored to have a autographed copy of the book in my library. He is also a noted historian. In addition, he has published a 4 Vol. work titled The United States Marine Corps in the Civil War. His uniform book is a must is a must for the enthusiast. Tons of color photos.

Nice start and a great figure, too! I'll be watching this thread to see your progress.

Scott

Thank you Scott

Great start. Will be following. Are you going to keep the white trousers?

Thank you Clr/Sgt and yes the trousers will be white, It was regulation that during the summer white trousers were to be worn and during the winter months the light blue were worn.

very nice start!

There was a unit of re-enactor's portraying the USM from the period 1848 up to the john Brown raid on Harper's ferry. I cannot find them anywhere on the net. I know the guy who ran them was some thing to do with USS Constellation. He was an authority on all things Marines.
Thanks for looking by.

Hi bob,it looks like youv'e made a good start,I like this figure, looking forward to seeing what you do with this one (y)

Thank you Brian, always welcome your input, appreciated.

Good start Bob, also following. (y)

Thank you Roger

Bob, what an interesting figure and story behind.
Such a great start on this, the Civil war certainly is a dark period of this nation, brother against brother and perhaps for that reason it is not one of my favorite eras, but the battles and uniforms are such a great display on military history and uniforms.
Keep up the good work, i will follow this one closely.
all the best
