Our friend wears the Gymnastiorka field blouse of the Red Army - the model that was issued from 1943.

Before that, the field blouse had a soft turn-down collar on which the badges of rank were also worn. Shortly before the end of the fighting for Stalingrad, a new model with a stand-up collar and shoulder pieces was introduced, which practically meant the return to the old tsarist uniform ...:

The color spectrum of the field blouses was, well - diverse ...

The gymnastiorka (field blouse) of our hero gets a super thin underpainting with acrylic paints today ...

Whereby I roughly indicate the course of light and shadow - especially on the back ...:

I've got a gymnastiorka in the loft somewhere. It used to fit me , oh, and a telogreika

You would be surprised mate. I shipped a lot of uniforms out last year but I've still got quite a bit, mainly British senior officer WW2 stuff (BD badged Brigadier Northern Command, RAVC Major BD, RAMC Captain BD, Lt Col RAOC Service dress - all the headgear, greatcoats, British Warms, boots, shoes, plus some US stuff. And a lot of 40s civilian clothing. That's just mine - the missus has shed loads of 40s stuff.

Tomorrow I will show the various colours of soviet Uniforms - and to the buttons we will come en détail when I will paint them. The were a lot of different ones...

The Red Army during the Great Patriotic War was by no means uniformly uniformed, but a rather motley bunch ...:

There were official regulations as to what color uniform shirts and trousers should actually be, but depending on the production location, available raw materials and quality, the clothing in reality had a huge variety of colors.

Here is an (incomplete) overview of what happened - whereby the blue trousers belonged to the Cossack uniform ...:

Good for me, because I have the free choice, so to speak!

At our friend's Gymnastiorka, I decided on a shade that is a bit more greenish-brown than the shirt of my NKVD Lieutenant, which I painted last year ...:

These colors are in the field blouse of our veteran ...:

I started with his back - that's how it turned out ...:

The fresh oil paint still shines a little - but that still works ...

Looking good Martin. Colours look very acceptable. I think the "gym" that the old guy is wearing is possibly post-war. I've got a couple which look identical and they are dated early 1950s. Buttons are green enamel with star motif. I like the photos. I've seen the first one before but in B+W - the second one looks like it might be from a movie. Nice work!

Hi Martin

Good colour choice from such a variety of options ..looking good so far as expected

Have you dry fitted the arms yet to see if there is any rework to fit

Thanks for update

Hi Martin

Nice update ...slowly the clothing us coming to life ...said it before still don't know how you paint in sections and get it to looks as one

Quick comment ...

I fitted the arms and then dry fit the head , once in place I found the hand to the eye is going to need a bit of rework to fit in ...just sharing my experience so far getting mine ready to prime and base .......Not starting yet though enjoying your SBS too much

Look forward to seeing more

So, actually I could be done with the Dymnastiorka shirt now - it was really fun to paint the hard folds ...:

But as you can see, I left out the button strip because ...

I'll tell you tomorrow ...

Hi Martin

That's gone well really quickly , good painting ...but you leave us with a tease with a unpainted button strip .....tommorow will reveal all I am sure ( On mine I added buttons and a button hole as seen in one of the reference pics )

Thanks for the fine update

Let's solve yesterday's riddle!

A button panel is called a "button panel" because - there are buttons!

And there are none on the bust!
(Sometimes I could really pull my hair out!)

So buttons have to go there, just like our model ...:

There were tens of different button variants on these field blouses, depending on the availability of raw materials. Here is a - small - selection ...:

What our friend is wearing are buttons made of embossed metal with a diameter of 14 mm, which were issued from 1940 - and which were essentially used almost unchanged as long as the Soviet Union existed ...:

By the way, astonishingly many of them were produced in the USA during the war and made available to the Soviet Union as part of the lend / lease agreement!

These are from New York ...:

One can now sculpt these buttons - but one can also make them from "slaughtered" pins - the size of the heads fits exactly ...:

Cheers

Hi Martin

Buttons look good , strange they were left off but easily fixed if a little annoying !

Great minds think alike as I said I added them to mine as well as just a button hole

Get the button panel painted now ! .

A question ...the 2 collar buttons at the panel top ....on the original are they the same size ?

.....wonder what will be the next area to look at ...possibly epsulettes or belts ?

...whatever it is I will be looking forward to the update

Happy benchtime

According to the instructions since 1943 all buttons should be equal (Collar, button placket, cuffs, pockets, shoulder straps).

But how it works in life:

"The sky is high and the tsar is far ..."
(Old Russian proverb)

The button placket is painted ...:

I only noticed the uncleanliness on the collar and the lower edge of the button placket when I looked at these enlarged pictures here.
That has already been corrected.

So - now the buttons, then the Gymnastiorka is ready, and then it's Christmas break.

Cheers
