Excellent job brother Patrick. I'm glad the comments "mean alot to you"-must be that you're in the kindler gentler Army

Great job on the flesh. The eyes, as other's have said are superb, but I guess when you're painting in 1/2 scale it can't be too tough so don't let your head get too big.

The only thing I would do, and I think someone already said it, is put a little more shadow in the corners of the helmet/armor. Gunze Sangyo "smoke" works well because it's transparent yet darkens with each subsequent application.

Now on the serious side, you did an outstanding job on this piece.

Patrick-

You have gotten some great input on weathering the armor helm. The only thing that I can add to that is that you could outline the individual plates with ivory black.

For the mail, you can add acrylic washes of umber and black. When it's dry you could buff that out and leave the shiny highs. Also, you can add a blue black and tad of burnt umber rust stains...

As others have said, this is very well done! :)

I agree, Keith...great feedback!
I'll see what I can come up with and post a couple updated pics...never thought about the acrylic wash...good call! Thanks! ;)

All the best

Patrick

Brother Lou, you slay me; come on now, you know I am a sensitive big guy just like Dick Butkus! And with a brother like you (and of course Larry), my head will never get too big ;) , trust me!

Definately will work the metal on the helmet more Lou. I am always leary of applying too much of anything because I have this fear of overhighlighting, but I guess the Gunze Sanyo smoke deepens the contrast and if I just apply at the corners I think I will be closer to where I want it to be...Does it thin with water?

thanks alot Lou...

All the best, hope you are well...

Patrick

It does thin with water but works better with the Sangyo thineer which is alcohol based (I think). The nice thing about the stuff is that you can't really over applyit since when you first put it on it's very light, only gets darker as you add subsequent layers.

I'm glad to hear that brother Larry is behind you with a trench tool in case you get egomaniacal on us :)

Patrick and Lou -

Can you give me some tips on the Sennelier flesh ochre use?

I tried some experiments with it and found that the overall color was duller than what I had used earlier (ie on my Red Lancer bust).
I used flesh ochre gold ochre, mars brown, cad red and tit white. I also used liquitex deep portrait pink for the acrylic base.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Keith

Keith,

Although I vary my flesh mixes depending on the desired effect and this by no means is "the way" to do it.My basic pallette consists of Flesh Ochre mixed with a touch (a tiny amount) of cad red and cad yellow. areas such as cheeks, temples and edges of the flesh (hairline, neck, etc) are a mix of flesh ochre and venetian red (just alittle venetian red) or Mars violet deep. Shadows are mars brown or mars violet deep with the darkest shadows in burnt umber. Highlights with naples yellow, Jaune brilliant and white. Sounds like a mix that's all over the place and varying colors but I get a pleasing healthy look.

Mybe if I have time this week I'll do a SBS for a face I was planning to do this week anyway.

Lou

Lou-

Thanks very much. I think both your and Patricks are the most natural oil flesh work that I have seen. I appreciate the direction.

If you can get in a SBS, that'd be great. if not, that is okay too. I understand all about the "... if I'm photoing or SBS'ing, I ain't painting..."

Keith

Fantastic piece Patrick. You have done a great job. I'd love to see the helmet when you work more on it.It does look out of place. But then again it's not finished.Well done

Stephen Mallia

Thanks Hardy...will certainly do just that! ;)

Keith,
When I get home tonight I'll post my mix...it isn't as far off from Lou's but's it's a lil different...

Thanks Stephen...the more I look at the helmet the more I agree, it needs work!

All the best

Patrick

Folks...
Just wanted to share this with you...I have to dull coat him and then hit the metal highlights one more time and he is done...
As always, look forward to your comments...

All the best

Patrick, the bust looks great. As everyone else said, the eyes are real nice. I do have a comment though (you asked :) ), i would maybe add some more shadows to the helmet, maybe darken it up a bit, along with maybe another wash on the mail to bring out the depth. Thats just my taste. Great job!

Patrick - Very cool. Well done work on the beard and flesh especially. Orange and blue look pretty darn good, too.

Deepening the shadows and adding highlights tothe mail and helm will only add to this bust.

After you have dulled coated and worked the metals, pls post some add'l pics.
