Well was anyone impressed so far with The beeb's latest adaptation of this epic novel.
I can only presume that the closing battle scene was meant to be Austerlitz and they eluded to mention it as it was so crap .
Seen better reenactment uniforms , most of the stuff here looked like it was from a carry on movie , half expected Sid James to turn up as Napoleon , What about that Great coat

That's a pity. Not a great fan of historical romances but I did plan to watch the battle scenes.
The producers made a big deal of the costume research and uniform authenticity with the only compromise being
material that looked authentic but was more practical for film purposes ........ don't think I'll bother with it.
I suppose though it's aimed at the general viewing public and not the small % of special interest viewers ........ the missus said she liked the cut of breeches accurate or not.

The cut off the breeches ! did they have any .
Can't imagine turning up at a prestigious ball wearing cavalry boots . buckled shoes and calf high stockings for officers " Sunday Dress code "

Costume department know their target market I suppose that these are the sort of things that women notice.
It's television entertainment based on a fictional love story targetted to a mainly female audience.
It builds an audience base which means that the producers can table audience numbers to attract funds for future projects

I do know my of from off's Del ; simple typo 1 but you know that .
You can make excuses for that trash last night which was billed as being an epic . It may well be ! an epic failure

Glad I didn't bother watching it now. I asked my wife if she fancied seeing it and she wasn't interested so I admired my latest purchases, did some filing/cleaning up and painted instead, sounds like a wise choice.

Didn't watch it so I'm not making excuses for it.........simply commenting that it is entertainment not an historical documentary. Guess that they expect it to be watched for the story rather than the uniforms.
I expect in television terms it'll be far from an epic failure.

Leaving aside the story, Ron brings up an interesting point.
Do we as historical modellers watch costume dramas with perhaps an over critical expectation?
I for one expect accuracy in Scottish costume in series like Outlander, mainly because the costumes are relatively simple and largely unregulated.
This makes the production cost so much less than that of War and Peace where some of the uniforms appear to have 200 or so buttons on them so I'm guessing that compromises were made.
I suspect that the majority of W&P's target audience wouldn't bother if Napoleons troops were armed with AK47's.

Well as far as television goes I suppose its better than Judge Judy , and the village of the damned " Emmerdale " and all other associated pish
Got to think the original was way above this effort though

Read the book many moons ago,and i quite like period dramas, but this lacked the quality of others i've seen.

Thought I better watch it. Visually impressive but not as 'Russian' as it should be.
It's definitely going to become a major hit and has been designed to sell to a world market particularly th US. Nothing wrong with that if it brings in revenue for continued development.
Now if you wanted to see something worth watching you should have done what I did and watched Deutschland 83 on Channel 4......at least most of us were alive during these events whereas only one of the membership lived at the time of W&P.;)
