Hi Marcus

Catching up on this and what a delight to see , cracking putty results and now the painting starts ....liking the wounds ...severe but not overly done , shirked looks good as well

For me this has and continues to be one if the most enjoyable V Bench to follow .....show casing how to approach such a project ...great research as well

Happy benchtime

Thank you mate, bit more work on the signifier this evening, still need to do weathering on him but need oils to dry first.

Working on the Signifiers tunic today in oils, also added his Gladius (Sword) and Pugio (Dagger).

I wanted to have the Signifiers discarded helmet in the scene, I’ve read and seen images of their masked helmet and think that is a cool look, so I’ve used one of the Miniart heads. The Miniart head for each figure comes in two parts and hollow, so adapted one of these for the mask, painted brass for a simple and effective conversion.

The mail looks good from a distance. The best mail I have found is from ladies' purses from the 1920's (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-...862604?hash=item1f1a567fcc:g:LxkAAOSwIc9e3-pM), the mail can vary from quite coarse to very fine..

The conversion work is first rate and is producing a very atmospheric diorama.

Mike
Thanks Mike, if I were to do chain mail again would use a slightly different technique. It’s a very time consuming process but needs to look right, think this passes for scale but does have room for improvement.

Hi Marcus

Nice painting update on the signifier , like the face mask idea

Will you weather I ever rust the mail up a little ?

Look forward to more from the bench

Thanks mate, yeah need fo weather him up a bit. I’m not going to overdo the chain Mail, thinking that unlike plate armour that has a larger exposed surface Mail would almost be self cleaning with movement rubbing the rings together.

Working on another figure today, doing a couple of the legionary from another cohort hastily banded together, so these guys have different colour tunic and scarf. Blue was an indication they served in the navy at some point; It adds a splash of colour. As this guy has been knocked to the ground he is blooded and bruised.

Jo Sonja, life colour and tamiya acrylics with W&N oils for the tunic.

Also weathered the Signifier shield combining with some Pilum and the damaged masked helmet, that might be an area of interest in the diorama.

I’m off on annual leave, so I’ve had a good day in the shed with the radio on working on two of the figures. Will go over the oil paint but need those painted to dry for a few days before going over them adding more detail. My aim is to create each as their own character, that when pulled together into the final scene will add to the realism.
