You will all have seen Nap's excellent version of this interesting bust. I bought mine based on watching his WIP and also because I have an interest in the Legion. So, let's see how it goes....

I found a small nick in the collar which will need attention - it's obviously a casting flaw as the collar detail is still there in the bottom of the chip

The other issue I have is the beard. It looks like one of those in the movie "Gettysburg" (remember Longstreet?) I realise there are limitations as to what can be achieved in the moulding/casting process, but I'm going to modify it. It may well go horribly wrong of course:eek:

This will be an on-and-off project as I have other stuff on the bench too, so please bear with me.

Hi Phil

Great to see this started ....I will bring a flask and biscuits to watch this from the sofa

Look forward to see what you do with the beard ...along with your other projects ...bearing with you !

Happy benchtime

Nap

Looking forward to this as seeing any repair or alteration work on top of painting will advance my knowledge

Mine too Graham:confused: As I said it could go horribly wrong, but I'll have some fun trying it. Thanks for watching(y)

So Phil do you watch Major Gerald on the legion channel? Actually rather cool that the Legion retirement facility looks after aging legionnaires in respectful way...and to watch the Legion training exercises they use a markedly different approach than say US Marines...of course they exist to be the fodder for France so their loyalty is built around fellow legionnaires ..

I am one of the .05% of people in the UK without a TV (it's a long story) so unfortunately I miss some useful stuff (and fortunately a whole shipload of crap, propaganda and social engineering). I know three ex-Legionnaires (one is a near neighbour). They all still feel part of that brotherhood. My neighbour passes me the odd copy of "Kepi Blanc" which makes interesting reading (and exercises my French, qui est plus faible:D)

OK all - as mentioned earlier in this thread, I intended to do some barbering to Gen Rollet's beard, as it doesn't look right to me - too long and narrow. So today I took a razor saw and trimmed about 4mm off the end. Looking at the man's image (courtesy Nap) the beard is somewhat fuller and the moustache is more noticeable. So, using dear old "green-stuff" I did some tonsorial restructuring and here is the outcome:

I am happier with the overall appearance now, but I have reservations about the shape of the face, which are not possible to rectify. Next job, get some undercoat on it and see how it looks.

Hi Phil

I am liking the rework ...wish I had redone he moustache on mine now !!, I too had slight doubts ref face shape but that was way beyond me ...lol

Look forward to more

Thanks for sharing

Happy benchtime and I do hope we can meet and display our stuff together next year ( fingers crossed )

Seasons greetings tonyiuvand all the family

Thanks Nap. Let's hope we can at least get some shows in - it's been a long year!

Have a quality Christmas you and yours, and try to get a bit of painting in between the mince pies!

Evening all. I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours at the bench this afternoon. It enabled me to get some undercoat on the General to see how the beard modification looks:-
Rolb 1.jpgRolb 2.jpg

- looks reasonable. I etched in a little more detail around the cheeks with a sharp blade, then blocked in the face to get some perspective on how it might look with colour added:-

- and also blocked in the beard

- it will be a lot whiter than that:D
Tomorrow I will start on the face using oils
