I think the answer is, the BBC wardrobe dept found the first one that fitted. That second photo doesn't even look like a military beret - sweatband is wrong. And they are all too small for WW2 pattern. Were I doing this guy, I'd paint it black. Certainly not green. In the Far East the beret wasn't that popular for obvious reasons of high temperatures and hot sun. Must've been a bugger wearing it under those studio lights - no wonder he was always sweating!
It's a great bust and you are doing it full justice mate.

According to my British uniform bible, the only beret universally issued in WW2 was khaki. Black was reserved for tanks, maroon for airborne, brown/cherry for 11th hussars, green for RM and there were unofficial white/beige berets for SAS. The standard blue/black wasn't adopted until post war... I think BSM Williams was given whatever came to hand in the props dept, like others have said, rather than following any regimental affectation.(y)

"To Kharki or not ....that is the question ...wether tis nobler to blame the props dept ......."

Watched a lot of episodes ...lots of Kharki ...can't find a episode where it changed to green though

Lots of good replies ...cheers guys

I feel a Kharki or maybe keep it green could be happening ........must remember this is a fictitious character and not get drawn in so much ! .....

Being green isn't incorrect as it was used in the series

Loving the sculpt though

Stay tuned

Happy benchtime

I agree Kev. You are depicting a figure from a TV series, so if he (wrongly lol) wore a green beret, leave it green.

This highlights a common problem in days gone by, film and TV using whatever was at hand, and looked vaguely military, being used to depict historical events. I could go on (i won't...lol), about the many, many gaffes that were made in so called "historical movies". Who can forget classics like "battle of the bulge", or anything involving classic battles, were the combatants engage in a mass,"free for all", melee...

He's looking good Kev. I particularly like the way his left eye stares down on the poor gunner getting a roasting..

Dont fret about the beret Kev. Your rendition is accurate. Taking the argument of "it's not historically accurate " to that level, means that 90% of tank models can be binned, and most historical figures, such as the various Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt et all too, because they are rarely "historically accurate".
Your BSM Williams RA is accurate, and more importantly, looks excellent. He is, in his own words, a "lovely boy"...
