Hello,

I started this old 54mm classic from Pegaso.

I did an underpainting with oils (Brunt Sienna and Umber.).

Then I started to paint with acrylics (after airbrushed a thin mate cote).

This is the earlier stage. Face is just started, hair not worked yet.
The metals parts need more work.....etc......

great work indeed! I've never heard of anyone doing an oil undercoat and THEN using acrylics before. I have to say this is a method I will have to try myself.

Its just because I like both acrylics and oils.....
I can't really choose....
Until I really sit front of my desk ready to paint that I choose what paint I'll use :)

If its oil, no problem.
If its acrylics, I'd need a thin mate cote before starting to paint.

Acrylics over oils?? Cool. And whatever, the result is looking great! Do you let them completely dry first? And do the acrylics flow properly? In my experience the oils are hydrophobic, so the water over it forms droplets....?

What was your approach for the metal parts.?

Cheers,
Adrian

That's why I use Mr.Super Clear Matt from Mr Hobby over the oil (I let the oil dry at least one or 2 days), before using acrylics.

For the metal parts.

I started with printer silver inks + Burnt Umber + black (oil).
After 2 days drying, I put Mr Super Clear.

Then with acrylics inks of blue, black....etc..... I started to work shadows and tones.
Then highlights with acrylics silvers differents tones I have from GW and others brands.

The finals highlights are with Humbrol Silver n°11.

Acrylics over oils might not be the best idea.
Unless the oil layer paint is fully 'cured' which can take months, the overlay of acrylic paint will start to crack and peel one day. Same reason why you should paint fat over lean with oils, otherwise the fatty underpainting will create cracks in the already cured lean overlayer.

Cheers

Brilliant painting on such a small figure. The highlighting and texturing on the cloak is very impressive.

I've also painted acrylics over oils. The secret I found was to keep your oil paint very thin by diluting with white spirits. It doesn't crack and is more akin to a filter or glaze over the base coat or primer.

It does not work on canvas because oils paint is very thick.

Here I paint very diluted, it dries quickly. I let it one or 2 days to completely dry.

I've done that for years, and never had problèmes.....
I have friends that have done that for longer than me : no problem.
