Many thanks Neal, he does have some great character in his face.

The feather is going to be quite a challenge me thinks, it needs quite a bit of thought before fixing in place.

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

Looking great. Re the feathers: without seeing what you bought it's difficult to say but as you say, you'll probably have to experiment (could you post a pic of it as I have some ideas).

... and sorry to lay another problem on you, but I noticed that the Terry Gilliam film version starring John Neville, on whom this bust is clearly based, has a plume as well (another trip to your wife's hobby shop?).

Out of interest, several variants, including the real man, the Gustave Dore drawing on whom Gilliam's version is clearly based and one of him in a mirleton below.

Thanks Neil,

I have cut the feather into pieces so a pic might be difficult but will try. I now have the film but only seen the beginning so far but will see about the plume then.

I have seen the pics on Google and downloaded some of them and read the link which is very interesting.

Cheers

Here it is Neil, I have split the stem up the thicker part and applied pva glue against the stem and each feathery strand so I can work with it.

I might need to shorted the feathery bits as they are far too long but at least I can handle each piece to work with it.

Hi Geoff, that's pretty similar to my playing about with much smaller fluffy feathers as below.

1 split down stem/quill
IMG_20200303_143743165.jpg

2 glue two halves together to bulk it out (could even do 3?)... there is a natural curve, so make sure they match
IMG_20200303_143918012.jpg

3 a bit stuck here as I don't have a tricorn to play with, but my idea is to glue inside the brim then use a tacky glue/hairspray/varnish, whatever, to curve them over and hold in place. I'm going to try leaving them folded over overnight and see if they take up a curve

4 then, as you say, trim

I got that furry fabric today: looks good (pic is just around the top of my finger: with today's screw tops there's a dearth of corks... so we'll have to pop a bottle tonight to get one :wacky:

I haven't trimmed it at all... it would need a haircut for smaller scales.

Only danger is that we're becoming a bit too much like those 'dress-em-up' action man figs (as with models, there's whole wardrobe fulls of German/SS uniforms... all rather worrying if you ask me).

I like what you are doing there but I am thinking of cutting mine off the quill now the PA glue has dried and working on them in smaller sections and probably just using the feathery ends of each section but that is just an idea.

That fabric looks super, ideal for a bearskin but the hiding of the seams might be a problem.

I hate seeing those German figures dressed up, the fabric is far too thick like the tunic breast pockets to look any other than a toy.

Thanks for all this info

Cheers

Hi Geoff,

Looking good... though as you say, perhaps needs a trim.

I think the only problem is that (like mine), they tend to stick up in the air rather than curve over the brim of the hat as per the photo, hence my trying to shape them (which hasn't really worked, they just spring back into shape... which I suppose is what feathers are good at. I wonder if some heat may do the trick?)

Aguilette next?

Yep, I'm finding the same... clearly feathers aren't designed to curl over in the way we want :(

Give the spray a go and see what happens.

However, the feathercraft/millinery sites say they'll curl along their long axis, so I think they may well do the trick for Nap's Zulu :)

Interesting the way the feathers have formed ...dare I say the feathers might look better less ragged and with more body around the tricorne ? .........just my thought !

Zulu ...feathers .......an idea ....will see if there are any ostritch wandering around

Looking forward to seeing how Geoffs looks after hairspray

Happy benchtime
