So I have, I think, come to the end of painting this pair, ain't gonna do another side by side like this again. I found it disrupts the flow as I switch figures to keep them in step with each other. Doing separate projects side by side is ok as one can be put on hold as I progress with the other.

Anyway nobody is all that interested in my rambling. I still have bases to finish and yes Kev they will be simple, I only ever do simple bases, in fact if you remember my first figures on here I just stuck them on a bit of wood with bark still on it.

I'll post in the completed board once I have them all based up and ready to gather dust.

Agree there , a fine 2 figures and good V Bench

David, Kev thank you gents, I think that using the AK Ultra Matt helps keep the colours subdued as does painting onto a grey primer. Either that or I haven't a clue as to how I keep the colours muted!

I shall display separately, both are from roughly the same period but the FFL is in what is now the north of Vietnam and the Spaniard is in the Philippines. So putting them together wouldn't really work, that and I don't have any two person bases.

Are you applying the AK by brush or by airbrush? I have some but haven’t had a chance to try it yet.

I’m seriously thinking of priming my next figure in black, as I am very curious to try it. Have you tried this?

Rob, I use the Ultra Matt to thin my paint, which might accout for patchy coverage at times, but I rarely ever use my airbrush. To be honest I hate cleaning it, so I win hands down applying everything by brush.

I have never tried a black undercoat, I have difficulty raising the chroma of what I paint using a grey cellulose car primer. When the current rattle can runs out I'll get a grey and a white from Halfords; using the same paints as I did with my latest two I have a achieved a much brighter red over an additional white undercoat. I'll post it once finished unless I break it again in which case it's probably going to have an intimate meeting with the wall.

I know many people swear by black underpainting so don't just take my word for it, give it a go if it doesn't work for you there is always a Dettol bath!

Like you, I have a love/hate relationship with my airbrush. Great result (usually), but 45 minutes or so of setup/teardown/cleaning after using it for just a few minutes is a bummer.

I’ve built and primed (white) a 120mm figure to paint after my hussar bust, but I think I will give black a try on the figure after that. I primed the 120mm in white because there are white uniform elements and I was not sure how I would handle painting up to white over a black undercoat.
