My next project is Alexandros’ tour de force bust of General of Division Eduard de Colbert-Chabanais, one of three brothers who served as cavalry generals in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. This is a ground breaking sculpt from the hands (or computer) of Ebroin Song. It was a Christmas present from my most excellent wife Lynne. I’m amazed that Alexandros got all of that casting into such a tiny box without breaking or warping anything.

I have already sculpted and painted this officer in a larger scale (~1/5) but nowhere near the quality of the current offering. I have also modelled his brother Auguste, most recently as a limited edition mounted figure from Il Volto del Comando.

The Alexandros bust looks to be based on this portrait.

I assembled and primed mine. I blocked in some colour before working on his eyes. I usually paint the whites only at this stage but apparently that’s creepy according to Lynne and my buddy Colin Semenenko. So in deference to them, I completed his eyes first thing.

All painting will be as usual in artist’s and hobby acrylics, metal powders, and acrylic inks.

First flesh tones.

Liquitex Light Portrait Pink Pro acrylic mixed with various sepia and brown acrylic inks.

The blue is a combination of two Scale Color tube acrylics: green grey and Prussian blue.

About 20 minutes to get from the first pic to here. That’s all for today.

Nice one Colin, at one time I had the metal.modeles version of him in the grey army but that seems to have been lost in the sands of time.

Interesting seeing your face painting and how you're developing the colours.

More flesh paint from the Scale Color eye dropper set and inks (crimson, scarlet, brick red, purple, sepia, blue). Still lots to do on this face.

This is my favourite part of figure painting. Seeing the facial character develop as I layer in different paints and inks. Achieving a face that I like motivates me to paint the less exciting bit of a model.

Looks great Colin, really finding it quite fascinating how you build up the layers and hues.

As a replacement for the Tamiya flat clear try the AK Interactive Uktra Matte. Very versatile, it can be brushed on or airbrushed, I have started using it instead of water to thin my paints. Everything comes up nice and matt without killing the chroma, it takes a few coats but it can matt metallic paint down as well.

Hi Colin

The updates are good to see , each showing the progress well

Ref the inks ........presume we are talking about a mix/wash of acrylics/or liquitex

Thanks for sharing this piece ...intrigued as to what’s the “less exciting bit” ....possibly the coat

Looking forward to seeing more

Have fun @ the bench

Thanks Simon. Good to know. I don’t use an airbrush at all. I’ve also been told Vallejo spray is a good alternative.

Thx Nap. I use inks two ways. As a concentrated colour to mix into acrylics or diluted in thin watery glazes or filters.

I find everything somewhat boring except face and awards. Pants, foot wear and groundwork are the worst. Hence busts.
